NY Daily News在連假期間閒得發慌，生出了大家最喜愛的比較文。

球員和球員可以比較、球隊和球隊可以比較、去年和今年當然也可以。
其實雖然自由市場的搶人大戰與明年球季的球員落腳處還遠沒有塵埃落定，
這類分析文永遠是大家最喜愛的討論焦點。

以下原文與極簡翻譯:

The Yankees have made three mighty splashes in the free agent pool this winter
that addressed their multiple mandates for the offseason. So how much better
are they after spending $423.5 million (so far) on the best starting pitcher
available, the best position player available and a second elite starter? Will
their incumbent players be better or worse? How about the manager?

Here's a look at the status and the verdict of each.

Keep in mind, of course, that this analysis explores the team at this moment.
Now that the Yankees have signed all these free agents, they may trade someone
such as Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon or Nick Swisher. Plus, they might add a
fifth starter - Andy Pettitte? - or insert one of the kids into the rotation
instead.

First base

The Status: Mark Teixeira in, Jason Giambi out. 

The Verdict: Huge upgrade. The Yankees accomplished four goals in one move when
they reached an agreement with Teixeira on an eight-year, $180 million contract
before Christmas - they got better on offense, better on defense, younger and
more athletic. Sure, Giambi had a decent offensive season last year (32 homers,
96 RBI, .247-.373-.502) thanks largely to the mystical oomph of his '70s-freak
mustache and gold thong, but he was an albatross on defense on a team that has
two competent infielders (Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter) who are only getting
older and one (Robinson Cano) who occasionally zones out at his position.
The Yankees needed a very good defensive player somewhere on the dirt and
Teixeira is it. Plus, Teixeira (29 in April) figures to be more durable than
Giambi, who will be 38 in January and was often brittle. Heck, Teixeira's only
negative might be that he'll block aging Yankees from making a position change
to first base.

一壘從大吉換成鐵爺後，攻擊、防守、速度、年輕(健康和耐戰力)，四個願望一次滿足。

雖然或許由於他的小鬍子和金色丁字褲帶來的神祕活力，大吉去年在進攻端表現還不差，
但防守端還是讓人不太敢領教，尤其他的內野搭檔群也都有各自的問題。

鐵爺所帶來唯一的缺點大概就只有這幾年一壘還想換人的話比較難換。
(還想換誰?某個這幾天引領板上戰文的傳說人物嗎?)



Second base

The Status: A new, improved Robinson Cano, perhaps?

The Verdict: Unclear. Which Cano shows up in spring training, the one who got
lazy over long stretches last season with the bat and glove or the one who was
taking more walks and working on his craft during the winter season? Was last
year just a blip or an alarming trend? Was he too comfortable after signing a
four-year, $30 million contract before last season? His pay doubles this season
- from $3 million to $6 million - and it's time for him to prove he's worth it
and not repeat a season in which his average, on-base percentage and slugging
percentage plummeted to career lows. The Yankees seem to believe in Cano,
though whispers of him being available in trades certainly had long legs this
winter.


總評:不甚明朗

明年春訓我們會看到今年季末那個攻擊防守都漫不經心的小Q、
還是冬季聯盟那個選求進步也努力專注的小Q?

去年的成績只是自然的漲跌或真的是反映實力的警訊?他簽長約後是否過太懶散?

明年他的薪水將是今年的兩倍，而他必須證明他值得。
至少現在球團似乎還是相信他的，即使這個冬天有關他的交易耳語一直沒斷過。



Third base

The Status: It's an odd-numbered year on the calendar, which historically has
meant Alex Rodriguez is a different player, at least in pinstripes. Both of his
Yankee MVPs have come in odd years and his even seasons haven't been nearly as
amazing.

The Verdict: Who knows? He's still probably the game's best player, but what
impact will his tabloid-fodder relationship with Madonna have on his season?
Yankee hitting coach Kevin Long has been quoted saying that Rodriguez was
hampered last season when going through a divorce from wife Cynthia, so there's
past history of his personal life bleeding into the diamond. The good news for
A-Rod is that Teixeira will be in the lineup as either protection for him or
someone to drive in.

總評:誰知道?

奇數年又到了，他在洋基的兩個MVP都是奇數年拿的。

當然A-Rod還是世界上最好的棒球選手之一，
但他私生活所造成的影響(以現在來看就是和娜姊的事)可能會帶來一點風險，
打教說08球季他處理離婚事務期間對球場表現造成了不小的起伏。

對A-Rod來說好消息是鐵爺的加入所期望能帶來的幫助。



Shortstop

The Status: A heathly Derek Jeter as his hand should be fully healed.

The Verdict: Possible upgrade. Jeter hit .344 over the final two months of the
season to finish at .300 after it appeared he'd miss the mark for the first
time since 2004. But he only had seven extra-base hits over that span.
Regardless of what he said, it's clear being hit by a pitch early in the year
nearly spoiled the season.

總評:可能是升級。

隊長在今年最後兩個月打出.344避免了他自04年以來第一個可能打擊率不到三成的球季，
但是在這期間也只有7支長打。

只要不像今年季初又被球打到，明年完全健康的他還是會有一定水準。

(紐約人的觀點真的和我們不太一樣?絕口不提退化疑慮，卻提他手受傷...)


Left Field

The Status: Johnny Damon was the primary left fielder last year, and could be
again. There is a chance, however, that Damon is the primary center fielder and
Nick Swisher starts in left.

The Verdict: No change. Damon is in the final year of his four-year, $52
million contract and played well last season. No reason to think he won't again
and he's generally been healthy in his career. If Swisher's the everyday left
fielder, it's a downgrade. He has a lot to prove after a horrific year with the
White Sox last season. Until he does, there's no reason to think he's near
Damon's equal.

總評:不變。

囧尼大門應該還是常駐左外野，當然也有機會把他優先移防中外野，讓Swisher先發左外野

沒有理由認為面臨合約年的大門無法複製去年的好成績，
但如果是Swisher天天先發左外野，那就是降級了，
在去年於芝加哥打出career-囧球季後，今年Swisher必須證明自己，
直到他做到之前我們沒有理由認為他會跟大門一樣好。

(我愈來愈搞不清這篇評比是以攻擊為重還是防守為重，還是隨他高興...)


Center Field

The Status: Depends on how the rest of the winter goes and what decisions are
made in spring training. Damon could start here or they could open a
competition between Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner. Or get someone else.
Cabrera started in center more often than anyone last season - 109 times. 

The Verdict: If Damon is here, then it's an offensive upgrade and a defensive
downgrade. If Cabrera regains the job he lost, it's a liability the Yankees are
probably willing to live with, based on their other hitters. If Gardner is it,
it's unclear what he'll bring to the lineup. Both Cabrera and Gardner would
provide more range than Damon.


總評:

如果是大門，那就是在攻擊端升級而防守端降級。

如果是Melky或Gardner，那比較難說，但是他們都可以提供比大門還要廣的range。



Right Field

The Status: Bobby Abreu's gone and likely replaced by Xavier Nady.

The Verdict: Downgrade. Nady is younger and coming off his best-ever year, with
career highs in homers (25), RBI (97), average (.305), on-base (.357), slugging
(.510) and doubles (37). But it's unclear whether it was just a career year for
Nady or the result of him blossoming. Abreu, meanwhile, was an ideal No. 3
hitter for the Yanks and a terrific run producer - he, A-Rod and Albert Pujols
are the only players in baseball to knock in at least 100 runs in each of the
last six seasons.

總評:降級。

Nady今年各項攻擊數據紛紛創下生涯新高，
但一樣的，我們不知道這是曇花一現還是開花結果。

反觀阿布是個理想的三棒打者和打點製造機，
聯盟只有他、A-Rod和Pujols在過去六季都敲進百分打點以上。[m


Catcher

The Status: Jorge Posada is healthy (we think). 

The Verdict: Huge upgrade. If Posada is able to catch 110-120 games, he will
lengthen the Yankee lineup considerably. But he's got to prove in spring
training and the early part of the season that his surgically repaired shoulder
is fit and won't hold him back. You've got to think the Yankees believe he's
going to be fine - he's on a throwing program right now. Would they really have
signed Teixeira if they thought Posada's arm wasn't right and he was destined
for first base?

總評:巨大的升級。

只要老波可以蹲110-120場以上，他可以給先發打線帶來可觀的提升，
當然他必須先在春訓和季初證明手術後的肩膀已經沒問題了。

你有理由認為球團是很相信他沒問題的，
否則你覺得如果他們認為老波只能站一壘，怎麼還會去買鐵爺?



Designated hitter

The Status: Hideki Matsui was the most-often used DH last season and figures to
be again unless he is traded.

The Verdict: Slight upgrade, only because Matsui should be healthy next season.
In 2008, injury limited Matsui to just 93 games, the second time in three
seasons his year was wrecked. Still, he hits and gets on base when he does play.
It will be interesting to see how often the Yankees are forced to use Posada
here.

總評:微幅升級。

松井還是會最常出現在這個位置上。
去年他因傷所困，但只要出賽依然可以提供穩定的安打和上壘率。

比較有趣的是觀察洋基要多常被迫將Posada放在這裡。



The Rotation

The Status: Hello, CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. Goodbye, Sidney Ponson and
Darrell Rasner. Wait your turn, Ian Kennedy.

The Verdict: Epic upgrade. Sabathia, Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang and Joba
Chamberlain make up the core of the rotation with either Andy Pettitte, if he's
re-signed, or Phil Hughes taking the last spot. There are risks - will Sabathia
handle New York? Has Burnett left his history of injuries behind? - but if the
two additions pitch to their talent, the rotation won't be the weakness it was
last season. Plus, guys like Kennedy and Alfredo Aceves will serve in the
Ponson-Rasner roles, which means much more talent backs up the rotation in case
of injury.

總評:史詩般的升級。

沒什麼好說的，全員都保持健康且沒有適應不良，則這個輪值人見人怕。

而IPK和Aceves入替去年Ponson和Rasner的角色也使輪值的保險比去年強壯很多。


The Bullpen

The Status: No major changes, which is probably a good thing.

The Verdict: No change, really. Damaso Marte for a full year will probably help
against lefties and more. Unlike the rest of us, Mariano Rivera does not seem
to be subject to the ravages of time. Perhaps Joe Girardi's greatest strength
last season was his ability to squeeze quality out of the bullpen and pitchers
such as Jose Veras and Edwar Ramirez. Brian Bruney is healthy and he showed
flashes of brilliance last season.


總評:不變。

沒有變動或許是一件好事。

Marte待完整的一整季在對付左打上會帶來更多幫助，MO一樣似乎不受年紀的影響，
吉總去年最大的成就可能就是激發出了Veras和Ramirez等人的潛力，
而去年健康的BB尼也令人驚艷。



後面還有最後一項評總教練，但我沒時間了。XD
