1. Yankees

Sure, it's difficult to cough up almost $450 million and not have a great
offseason, but the Yankees are indeed a much better team. In CC Sabathia they
have an elite-level ace at the front of the rotation, and in A.J. Burnett
they have a useful arm in the second or third spot (provided he stays
healthy, of couse). Mark Teixeira gives them power and on-base skills in the
middle of the lineup, and he'll also improve the shoddy infield defense. And
the trade for Nick Swisher gives them positional flexibility and another
option in center. As for the re-signing of Andy Pettitte, it gives them
uncommon depth in the rotation. There are no guarantees in a division as
tough as the AL East, but for their troubles the Yankees have gone from
third-place team to best-on-paper status.

2. Giants

GM Brian Sabean is coming off a quietly efficient winter. Randy Johnson,
despite his age, improves the rotation behind Tim Lincecum, and he'll almost
certainly notch career win number 300 in a Giants uni. Edgar Renteria, whose
peripherals suggest a rebound year at the plate, is a significant upgrade at
short, and Jeremy Affeldt may be the value reliever of the offseason. Also,
Bob Howry is a bounceback candidate. The Giants will have trouble scoring
runs, but their exceptional rotation means they can contend in the weak NL
West.

3. Athletics

Oakland last season had one the worst offenses in baseball, and they've
addressed that weakness by trading for Matt Holliday (pictured) and signing
Jason Giambi. They'll upgrade two serious trouble spots in the lineup. And
the bullpen is in better shape after the additions of Michael Wuertz and the
underrated Russ Springer. In fact, the Oakland bullpen may be the best in the
game. It's probably not enough to overtake the Angels, but the A's must now
be taken seriously in the AL West.

GM Frank Wren has done a nifty job of repairing the Atlanta rotation. Derek
Lowe is a safe bet for 200 innings and a sub-4.00 ERA, Javier Vazquez is
generally underrated, and Kenshin Kawakami should be a reliable innings-eater
in the third spot. The Braves could still use another bat, particularly in
the outfield, but the rotation is much improved. Potentially, they're a
threat in the East.

5. Rays

They've addressed the hole at DH by signing Pat Burrell to a bargain
contract, young Matt Joyce gives them left-handed power in the outfield, Gabe
Kapler helps their depth, and Lance Cormier gives them another arm in the
bullpen. Call it improving at the margins if you like, but that's all the
Rays needed to do to stay in contending shape. They'll be right there with
the Yankees and Red Sox.

以廉價合約簽下Burrell讓光芒補強了DH的漏洞, 年輕的Joyce則是有拋瓦的左打外野手,
Kapler加強板凳深度, 而Cormier則是牛棚的另一隻牛. 光芒以有限的餘額作了補強, 但
這都是光芒必須做的補強以維持競爭力. 他們將與洋基和紅襪一起角逐競爭美東冠軍寶座.
