The Lighter Side of A.J. Burnett
AJ的另一面......
A.J. Burnett has shown his mischievous side lately, slamming whipped-cream
pies into the faces of Melky Cabrera, Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon after
their game-ending hits last weekend. But close observers of games at Yankee
Stadium have seen that side of Burnett.
For years, the highlight of the nightly blooper reel at Yankee Stadium was a
clip from Sept. 7, 2001, when Burnett was a Florida Marlin. Warming up
between innings of a game against the Mets,
Burnett fired a fastball through
the window of a moving van behind the plate.
The Yankees would show it once, then put the word “Wow!” on the screen,
then show it again. The crowd roared every time. It was unmistakably the
crowd’s favorite blooper, even more popular than Tommy Lasorda’s famous
All-Star Game somersault. Now that Burnett is a Yankee, though, the clip has
been retired.
“I told them to put it back up,” Burnett said. “I want to see it again.”
Burnett is serious on his workdays, and he learned the value of preparation
between starts from his former teammate Roy Halladay in Toronto. But he also
knows how to have fun, and if he is not quite a clubhouse leader, he is close.
“I’m definitely not a follower,” Burnett said. “This is our job. This is
what we do. If you’re not having fun here, you shouldn’t be here. Obviously
the last few days, when we’re winning, it’s a lot of fun.”
Burnett, who signed for five years and $82.5 million, said he has not changed
his personality just because he changed teams. He has adapted easily to the
Yankees’ clubhouse, and though his pie-in-the-face routine might make him a
target for payback, he has only been victimized once in his career.
“Matt Stairs got me in Toronto with the Gatorade cooler,” Burnett said.
“I was doing an on-field interview. I got orange Gatorade all over me.”
As for that infamous blooper from 2001, Burnett admitted he was sick of seeing
the van, which carried the mascot Billy The Marlin, circling the field while
he warmed up. It caused a delay of several minutes for the glass to be picked
up.
“I was young and stupid,” Burnett said, before smiling and reverting to his
official explanation at the time. “But it slipped.”
