ATLANTA -- Johnny Damon arrived at Turner Field on Tuesday expecting to test
his sore right calf during batting practice and begin his night batting in
the top of the first inning vs. the Braves.

The Yankees had other ideas. Damon continues to report some discomfort in the
calf, which he hurt on Saturday after committing a sixth-inning error, and he
will have one more day on the bench to try and get it right.

"I had plans of coming in and playing today, but they don't like the fact
that I still feel something back there," Damon said. "I have to listen to
them and understand and try to go out there and see how it feels. If it's
something that is going to hinder my every movement, then we'll have to
reassess it."

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that no tests are currently planned and that
Damon should be available off the bench to pinch-hit on Tuesday. He said that
running during BP would not have been an acceptable substitute for gauging
the calf at full speed.

"The fact that he feels it, I don't think you can really test it during BP
like you're going to test it in a game," Girardi said.

The fear, of course, is that Damon could increase the injury if he were to
push it. Melky Cabrera started in left field instead, with Brett Gardner in
center and Nick Swisher in right.

"I think that's why they decided to go ahead with the decision to not start
me tonight," Damon said. "If I do go out there and push it, I could be out
for a while. I'm going to move around lightly out there, take some BP and be
ready when and if he calls me."
