Jeter sits another day with illness

NEW YORK — Derek Jeter was one of the first Yankees to arrive at Citi Field
yesterday and quickly informed manager Joe Girardi that he wanted back in
the starting lineup against the Mets after missing Friday night's game with
the flu.
But team doctor Chris Ahmad overruled the team captain, saying Jeter needed
the rest. Ramiro Pena was back at shortstop for the 5-0 victory.
"I went with what the doctor said," Girardi said. "I know Jeet isn't
happy about it. But he was pretty sick last night."
In a raspy voice, Jeter admitted to having a headache and a cough. But
he disagreed with Girardi's decision. "That's on him, man. I told him I
could play. That's all his decision," Jeter said.
Left fielder Johnny Damon also missed the game with the same illness.
According to Girardi, Damon was up all night coughing after going 1 for 6
on Friday.
The flu has been going through the team. Along with Damon and Jeter,
Chien-Ming Wang, Phil Hughes Melky Cabrera and Hideki Matsui have had it
to varying degrees along with members of the coaching and support staffs.
"It kind of went around," Girardi said. "That's what happens when you're
in clubhouses and on planes together."
