NY Yankees notes: Reliever David Robertson shut down with elbow tightness

NEW YORK -- The Yankees have shut down right-handed reliever David Robertson,
who for the last two weeks has experienced lingering tightness in his right
elbow. The team is scheduling an appointment with orthopedic surgeon James
Andrews.

Robertson, who has no history of elbow issues, underwent an MRI on Monday
but the results proved inconclusive, prompting the Yankees to send Robertson
to the specialist Andrews.

The news is surprising considering how well Robertson has pitched. The
24-year-old is 2-1 with a 3.29 ERA in 42 appearances. In 41 innings,
Robertson has 61 strikeouts.

"We've all seen how he's pitched," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
"He's been lights-out."

Robertson said the stiffness typically sets in after his appearances.
Girardi has tried to manage the injury by keeping Robertson from pitching
back-to-back days. But even with the extra rest, the stiffness has returned
after every appearance.

"I'm not too concerned," Robertson said. "I don't think there's anything
too wrong."


Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain may return to the bullpen -- at least
for one series.

If the Yankees lock up the top seed in the American League, they will have
their choice of schedules for the AL Division Series. One schedule gives
teams an off day between Games 1 and 2 while the other does not.

With an off day after game one, the Yankees would need only three
starting pitchers to get through the series. Without the off day,
the Yankees would need four.

"There are two different division series where one you would need three
starters and one where you'd need four," Girardi said. "I'll just leave
it at that."


CC Sabathia will get an extra rest day before his next start,
Sunday against the Orioles. Andy Pettitte will open the series on
Friday while A.J. Burnett goes on regular rest Saturday.

With the Yankees holding a comfortable lead in the AL East, Girardi is in
position to give his starting pitchers extra time.

"We have no plans right now of skipping a guy, or if you've got a lead,
a big lead, you get a guy out after five innings, we'll think about doing
that," Girardi said, pointing to the use of Burnett on Monday night.

Girardi pulled Burnett after six innings and 99 pitches.

Derek Jeter started Tuesday night's game as the Yankees' designated hitter,
one day after starting both ends of a doubleheader.

"This way he can come out of the lineup and in a sense not come out," Girardi
said. "I think for him he understands the rest is good for him. But he gets
to hit."

Jeter started the day four hits shy of eclipsing Lou Gehrig's franchise hits
record, which stands at 2,721.
