Rain Threatens Game 6, but Not Pettitte's Start By DAVID WALDSTEIN Published: October 23, 2009 New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/24/sports/baseball/24pins.html After several days of sunshine, the American League Championship Series returns to New York this weekend, and with it comes the obligatory forecast of gloom. Substantial rainfall is predicted throughout the day Saturday, and it could last well past the scheduled first pitch time of 7:57 p.m., soaking the field at Yankee Stadium and threatening to postpone Game 6 until Sunday, when the weather is expected to clear. The Penn State Department of Meteorology expects one to two inches of rain in New York and said the storm might not pass through until after 10 p.m. Of course, there were weather-related concerns about Games 1 and 2 last weekend, and both those games proceeded without delay, despite chilly temperatures and some extra-inning rain Saturday night. But at that time there was more pressure to play through adverse conditions because of concern the games might start to back up. Now, with the World Series not scheduled to begin until Wednesday, Major League Baseball has more flexibility to postpone Game 6 until Sunday, play a potential Game 7 on Monday and still not create any havoc with the overall schedule. Should Game 6 be pushed back a day, it would provide the Yankees and the Angels additional options regarding their starting pitching rotations. Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said Friday that if Game 6 were delayed, he would consider bringing back the Game 5 starter John Lackey, the Angels’ ace, for a Game 7 on Monday, since he would then be pitching on three days’ rest. “If there is an opportunity to look at bringing a guy like John back, it’s something we would certainly consider,” Scioscia said during a conference call. “We’ve talked about a bunch of different things.” Yankees Manager Joe Girardi took a different approach, saying he had no plans to swap the scheduled Game 6 starter Andy Pettitte with C. C. Sabathia, the starter for a potential Game 7. “We plan on Andy starting our next game for us,” Girardi said after the Yankees’ workout late Friday afternoon. “I’ve heard reports that we’re going to get tomorrow’s game in. And I’ve heard other reports. It seems like we were just doing this five or six days ago. So we’re planning on playing tomorrow and Andy is pitching.” The Angels are countering with the left-hander Joe Saunders, who allowed two runs in seven innings in Game 2. Sabathia, who has won both his starts and has a 1.13 earned run average in the series, pitched Game 4 on Tuesday. Sunday would be his normal day to pitch on four days’ rest. If a rainout forced Game 6 to Sunday and Sabathia pitched and the Yankees won, Sabathia could then pitch Game 2 of the World Series on three days’ rest, but he could then start only two World Series games instead of three. If Sabathia has to pitch a potential Game 7 on Monday, he would not be available for the World Series until Game 3. Then again, Girardi knows that if Pettitte pitches Game 6 and closes out the series, Sabathia will be in line for Game 1 of the World Series. Girardi has every reason to feel confident in Pettitte in Game 6. The left-handed Pettitte will be making his 38th postseason start. He has pitched the equivalent of a full season of starts in October. In 231 postseason innings, he is 15-9 with a 3.90 E.R.A. He will surpass John Smoltz in career postseason victories if he wins one more playoff game. “All the starts that I’ve had in the postseason, and all the innings, they ’re not going to help me when I’m out there,” Pettitte said. “It’s a matter of getting out there and having my cutter cut and my location being good.” Pettitte is 6-2 in League Championship Series play with a 4.14 E.R.A., including 2 starts for the Astros and 10 with the Yankees. In his last five postseason starts, Pettitte is 1-0 with a 2.30 E.R.A. That kind of big-game success is why so many of Pettitte’s teammates are thrilled knowing he will take the ball. “Andy is here for a reason,” catcher Jorge Posada said. “He loves playing in the postseason. Andy’s been so good for us throughout the years. He’s a big-game pitcher. I know he’s going to be ready for the game tomorrow.” Pettitte has not made a decision about pitching next season, and he said he had not thought about his next start possibly being his last one. He has, however, allowed for the possibility that it could be a wet one. “My wife called and said, ‘There’s a 100 percent chance of rain,’ ” he said with a laugh. “Well, there was 100 percent chance the first two games, too. I started a game here and it was coming down sideways. I couldn’t even see home plate. So I figure we’re going to play. That’s how I look at it." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 58.115.141.104
