And Now, the Encore: Yanks Charting Off-Season Course

General Manager Brian Cashman started assembling his scouts on Tuesday,
beginning the annual brainstorming sessions that chart the Yankees’
off-season.

In some ways, the task was easier last winter, because the Yankees’ goals
were more clearly defined. They were losing Mike Mussina, Bobby Abreu and
Jason Giambi. They needed help at the front of their rotation and a big bat
for the middle of the order. The targets were obvious: C.C. Sabathia,
A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira. The Yankees signed them all, brought
back Andy Pettitte, and traded for Nick Swisher, too.

去年的工作比較簡單，因為洋基的任務很確定。他們陣容中失去Mussina, Abreu以及

It is harder to find flaws on a team that has just won the World Series.
Cashman and his staff must take a hard look at what will happen, not what
already has. Yes, Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui were productive last season,
but if they come back, how will they affect the rest of the team?

再從冠軍隊中找到缺點是有點難度的。Cashman與他的團對必須好好審視將來可能
會發生的事情，而不是已經發生的事情。沒錯，Johnny Damon 以及松井秀喜在去年度

Manager Joe Girardi did a great job last season getting the most out of
players in their mid- to late-30s. It is hard to ask them to perform to
the same level again. The Yankees have not ruled out bringing back Damon
and Matsui, but the critical question this winter is when to make the move
to get younger. Obviously, it has to come sometime.

吉總上個球季在大數球員都是30多歲的情況下，讓球員發揮到最大。
不過要他們在重複一次，是有點苛求的。洋基並沒有排除簽回Johnny Damon
以及松井秀喜，但是今年冬天最重要的議題是要如何年輕化。

Just like last year, the Yankees have a major edge on other teams because
of their financial might. Unlike last year, though, they do not need to be
so aggressive. The free-agent class is much weaker at the top, and many
teams are determined not to raise their payrolls. The Yankees can afford
to wait and see if quality free agents trickle down to them.

就跟去年一樣，洋基比其他球隊有點優勢，因為他們的財力。但與去年不同的是，
今年他們不需要很積極。今年的自由球員市場相對比較弱，而且不少球隊打算
減低薪資總額。洋基可以等待，先看看哪個自由球員他們可以簽。

Could that mean a left fielder like Matt Holliday or Jason Bay? They’re
right-handed hitters, but either would add thunder to the lineup while
making it younger. And what about the rotation?

會是指Matt Holliday或Jason Bay嗎？他們是右打者，並可以使打線更好，並年輕化。
至於先發輪值圈呢？

After Sabathia, Burnett and Pettitte (assuming he re-signs), the Yankees
have a slew of options still under contractual control: Joba Chamberlain,
Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Chad Gaudin, Sergio Mitre, Alfredo Aceves
and (gulp) Kei Igawa. But what about a high-risk, high-reward gamble from
the free-agent market?

在 CC, AJ以及Andy（假設他續簽）之後，還與洋基有合約的球員中的選擇是：

Ben Sheets, Rich Harden and Erik Bedard have all been top-of-the-rotation
starters in the recent past. All are free agents coming off seasons marred
by injury. Really, the Yankees would have nothing to lose by signing one
of them. The price would probably be low enough that the Yankees could
afford to outbid other teams, and if they sign someone and he gets hurt
again, they are protected with the starters they already gave.

Ben Sheets, Rich Harden以及Erik Bedard都曾經是先發輪值表前端的的投手。
上述球員全都是因傷導致球季縮短。洋基如果簽下他們之一，真的沒什麼損失的，
洋基給的低價合約，即使比其他球隊出的還高價都還負擔得起，如果簽下他們之一後，
他又受傷了，他們也受到一點的保護，因為他們所付出的價碼不高。


It’s just an idea, but one that will surely be debated by the scouting staff
this week. It is their job to assess every possibility, and with the Yankees,
anything and everything is usually possible.

這只是個人想法，但是可以肯定的是，在本週登場的會議中，球探們會進行辯論（討論）
這是他們的工作，評估各種可能性，而在洋基，任何事情通常都存有可能性。
