Three weeks ago, Johnny Damon was on top of the world, as he and the Yankees
brought a championship to the Bronx. Tuesday, he was on top of the Empire State
Building, where the free-agent outfielder and auto racing fan was on hand as
four-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson flipped the switch to light up the
skyscraper in his No. 48 team's blue, white and yellow.
"The fact that he can go out and win four championships in a row, you're not
going to see too many sports do that anymore," Damon said. "Hopefully, if I'm
part of the Yankees, we can say four's going to happen."
Asked if that means that he is looking for a three-year deal to stay in
pinstripes, Damon delivered a message to Yankees GM Brian Cashman.
"I know what's here in New York - you have the new Stadium, you have the great
coaches, you have the great players," Damon said. "You guys just have to tell
Cash to get things going with me. I'm up for it."
Damon, told the Daily News earlier this week that he wants to come back, but
"if (other teams) are interested, I'm going to listen," and echoed both
sentiments Tuesday.
Helping the Yankees try to win another title appeals to Damon not only because
of his comfort level in New York, but because of what leaving would mean.
"I can help bring in new faces - the CC (Sabathias) and A.J. (Burnetts) - I
know (the Yankees' front office is) very proud of that," Damon said. "Hopefully
I'm still a part of that. I've worked so hard to help bring players along here,
I don't want to have to face them."
Damon insists he won't follow the recent trend of free agents appearing at the
winter meetings to find a deal. He is taking his wife, Michelle, on a European
vacation and letting agent Scott Boras sort things out.
"I really don't think I need to go to Indianapolis and do the Rod Tidwell walk
down free agency road," he said, referring to Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character in
the 1996 film "Jerry Maguire." "I think teams know what I can bring."
