Hughes named Yankees' fifth starter http://tinyurl.com/yftlvpy TAMPA, Fla. -- Phil Hughes is the winner of the Yankees' fifth-starter sweepstakes, manager Joe Girardi revealed on Thursday. Hughes, who was told earlier in the day that he would start against the Phillies on three days rest on Friday, won the job over Joba Chamberlain, Alfredo Aceves and Sergio Mitre. Chad Gaudin, another candidate, was released on Thursday. The right-handed Hughes will have an innings limit higher than that placed on Chamberlain last season, Girardi said. The manager said that he was impressed by Hughes' improved changeup during his past two Spring Training outings.
