Pitching and defense have led the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees all season,
and Tuesday night's game against the Durham Bulls was no exception.
Zach McAllister picked up his fifth consecutive win and, with the help of
several highlight-reel plays turned by his defense throughout the night,
led the team to a 4-3 victory.
The tall righty went 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball for the Yankees,
striking out two and walking two as he improved to 5-2 on the season.
"I guess it's just getting comfortable with being here, even though I
was up here last year for a start or two," McAllister said. "Now I'm just
kind of finding my groove, going after hitters and sticking to my
gameplan."
It was the eighth time his last nine outings that McAllister went at least
six innings of work.
"I've been really happy with my last three games or so, including this
one," McAllister said. "I'm getting a lot more groundballs which, when
I'm pitching right I'm getting groundballs."
Durham looked to be in control of the game early, scoring a run in
the second inning and holding Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scoreless after the
Yankees loaded the bases with one out in the first inning.
The Yankees failed to record a hit in three innings against Bulls
starting pitcher Aneury Rodriguez, but would slug out five in the fourth.
Designated hitter Jon Weber started the inning with a triple over the
head of Durham centerfielder Desmond Jennings and came around to score
on a line-drive single by first baseman David Winfree.
After a walk to rightfielder Colin Curtis put runners on first and second,
leftfielder Reid Gorecki singled home the Yankees' second run of the game
and later scored on a wild pitch.
Greg Golson added a RBI-single before the inning was over, putting the
Yankees up 4-1.
That was all the run support McAllister needed, as he allowed just two
hits after the second inning.
Durham threatened late in the game, scoring a run in the eighth inning
off Yankees relief pitcher Boone Logan and putting the tying run on base
before Ryan Shealy-who drove in the Bulls' first run on a line-drive double
to left-struck out to end the threat.
Jonathan Albaladejo came on to close the door for Scranton Wilkes-Barre,
striking out two batters and retiring one on a bare-handed play by third
baseman Matt Cusick.
"Especially with the infielders, everyone wants to make the next great
play," Cusick said. "We've got Reegie (Corona) over there making circus
plays and (Nunez) is showing off his strong arm. It's kind of fun.
Everyone wants to get in on the action.
The save was Albaladejo's league-leading 17th of the season. He now has 28
saves in his career with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, good for fourth place on the
franchise's all-time list.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is now 16-4 in games decided by one run, while Durham
dropped to 9-13 in one-run games including a 2-11 record in its last 13.
The teams meet in the third game of the four-game series Wednesday at 7:05
p.m. Richard De Los Santos (3-2, 4.12), who picked a win against the
Yankees the last time the two teams faced off, gets the start for Durham,
while Dustin Moseley (2-2, 4.17) will take the mound for
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Durham dealt Moseley a loss in the teams' last meeting, tagging the Yankees'
right-hander for eight hits and six runs in five innings.
