Dave Eiland is taking a personal leave of absence from the Yankees, and

while Joe Girardi declined to offer any details about his pitching

 coach’s departure, a source said Eiland is dealing with a family issue.


The source didn’t specify the nature of the issue, saying only that it

was not a medical-related situation with Eiland or any of his family

members.



“He’ll be gone as long as he needs,” Girardi said. “That’s all I’m

going to share.”



Eiland will be replaced on a temporary basis by bullpen coach Mike Harkey,

while Charlie Wonsowicz, the team’s advance scout and head video

coordinator, will assume Harkey’s spot as bullpen coach. We’ll carry on

as business as usual,” Girardi said. “Dave is very valuable to us and

we’re going to miss him, but just like when you have a player go down,

people have to pick up and help out. We’ll make it work.”



Eiland, 43, has been the Yankees’ pitching coach since 2008, joining the

staff during Girardi’s first season as manager.
