Robinson Cano won’t have to worry about Home Run Derby hangover after all.

A source told the Daily News that the Yankees’ All-Star second baseman has
decided not to take part in the event next Monday.

The decision comes one day after manager Joe Girardi and hitting coach Kevin
Long each expressed concerns over his participation, but while the coaching
staff’s words may have played some part in Cano’s decision, it’s more
likely that a minor back injury played a larger role.

According to a second source, Cano has been receiving treatment on his back
for the past two or three days, though the injury has not kept him out of the
lineup. Gene Monahan, the Yankees’ athletic trainer, expressed his concern
on Tuesday about Cano participating in the Home Run Derby given the situation
with his back.

“The back probably has more to do with it than any of the other stuff,” the
source said.

It’s no secret that the Yankees were dismayed that Cano had decided to
participate in the Home Run Derby without consulting the team, and while the
decision to take part in the event is the player’s alone, most players
discuss it with their team before agreeing to partake in the showcase event.
