Kevin Towers, the former and long-time San Diego Padres general manager, will
be named the next GM of the Arizona Diamondbacks, baseball sources said Tuesday
night.
Kevin Towers was chosen among five candidates for the Arizona job.
Towers, 48, replaces Jerry Dipoto, who held the position on an interim basis
after taking over for Josh Byrnes in July. Towers’ contract is believed to
be for two years guaranteed, with more option years after that.
Dipoto, formerly the team’s vice president of player personnel, could remain
with the organization in another capacity, according to a club source.
The Diamondbacks considered five candidates for the position: Towers, Dipoto,
Angels scouting director Eddie Bane and Dodgers assistant general managers
Logan White and De Jon Watson.
After reaching the National League championship series in 2007, the Diamondbacks
have fallen to last place in the NL West the past two seasons.
Towers’ Padres reached the postseason four times during his tenure as general
manager, from 1995-2009. They reached the World Series in 1998, when they lost
in four games to the New York Yankees. Towers had worked as a scout and advisor
for the Yankees since being fired by the Padres.
The Diamondbacks fired manager Bob Melvin in July as well. His replacement,
interim Kirk Gibson, is likely to return next season.
