To a man, the Yankees said they had no rooting preference in the Tampa Bay- Texas series, and since there was no sodium pentathol readily available in the postgame celebration Saturday night, we’ll have to take their word for it. Do I believe them? I do, even if facing Cliff Lee in the playoffs sounds as appealing as taking a bath with piranhas. Each team is capable of giving the Yankees fits. The Rangers have a deep and power-packed lineup that isn’t averse to stealing a base or two. They, by the way, have that Cliff Lee fellow. And they also swept three games from the Yankees in mid-September – though, to be fair, Sabathia, Pettitte and Hughes did not start, and Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher were ailing then. What the Rays lack in offensive potency (.247 average), they make up for in resourcefulness, ranking third in runs scored and leading the majors in walks and stolen bases – their speed could seriously test Jorge Posada. The Rays, by the way, have that David Price fellow. And they won 10 of 18 games against the Yankees this season, toppling them for the division crown and home-field advantage. With the way their three starters pitched against Minnesota – 3-0, 2.25 earned run average — the Yankees are confident how they match up against either team. All things considered, the Yankees, you could say, even have the advantage in that department. They also have historically pummeled two of the Rays’ potential starters after Price – James Shields (3-8, 4.91) and Matt Garza (1-4, 4.48), who could pitch the first two games of the American League Championship Series. After Lee, only two members of the Rangers’ rotation have made as many as three starts against the Yankees: C. J. Wilson and Colby Lewis, who last faced them in 2003. Price and Lee, because they are starting Tuesday night, most likely will not be ready to pitch again until Game 3 of the A.L.C.S. at Yankee Stadium. I wonder how that, if at all, affects the Yankees’ rotation alignment. As in, whether they would rather start Phil Hughes or Andy Pettitte opposite Price/Lee in Game 3. Remember, if the Yankees opt for a four-man rotation (welcome back, A. J. Burnett), the Game 3 starter will also be in line to pitch a potential Game 7. Anyway, the Yankees will not know their opponent in the A.L.C.S. until late Tuesday. Until then, the floor is yours. Which team do you think they would rather play?
