Hughes to Pitch Game 2, And Here’s Why


ARLINGTON, Tex. – Phil Hughes may never pitch again this postseason at
Yankee Stadium – at least, that is the Yankees’ hope. Hughes is scheduled
to pitch Game 2 on Saturday at Rangers Ballpark and, if necessary, Game 6
right back here next Friday. Should the Yankees advance to the World Series,
the same order would almost certainly apply.

Regardless of how well Hughes pitched in the division series clinching
victory against Minnesota on Saturday, his stats are markedly better on the
road – and especially at Rangers Ballpark. That is just one of the reasons
Joe Girardi decided to flip him and Andy Pettitte, who will start Game 3
Monday opposite Cliff Lee at Yankee Stadium, in the rotation. Another?
Pettitte, with his 41 postseason starts, is the man they want on the mound
in a potential Game 7 against Lee.

Here are some statistics that ultimately swayed Girardi and the Yankees to
make a change:


Hughes in 18 starts at home: 4.66 E.R.A., 20 home runs,.755 O.P.S.
(on-base plus slugging)

Hughes in 13 games (11 starts) on the road: .347 E.R.A., 5 home runs,
 .624 O.P.S.

Hughes vs. left-handed hitters: 17 home runs, .728 O.P.S.

Hughes vs. right-handed hitters (of which the Rangers have several): 8 home
runs, .673 O.P.S.

Hughes in 3 career appearances (2 starts) at Rangers Ballpark: 2-0,
0.00 E.R.A., 3 hits in 15 and a third innings.


Not that he is complaining, but his success here confounds Hughes. It’s not
as if the mound is groomed to his liking, or that the Rangers present a
favorable matchup, or that the ballpark is tailored to his pitching style.
His three times pitching here — including his start on May 7, 2007, when he
no-hit the Rangers over six and a third innings before leaving with an
injured left hamstring — he has happened to throw well.


“I wish I knew,” Hughes said. “I’d try to make it that way everywhere,
if I could.”
