Jeter, Mo and Andy are core questions

As the Yankees' season came to an end last night, three members of the Core
Four conceivably may have walked out of the Bombers' clubhouse for the final
time.

Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte are free agents this winter,
and while the smart money is that all three will be back in pinstripes in
2011, they didn't have much to say regarding their respective futures after
Friday night's ouster at the hands of the Rangers.

"I can't think about that," Jeter said. "We just lost, what, 15 minutes
ago? I'm not thinking about myself right now."


Jeter just finished a 10-year, $189 million contract, doing so with a down
year. He had 10 home runs and 67 RBI, posting career-lows with a .270 average
and .340 on-base percentage.

Even as he watched his team's World Series hopes go down in flames, the
36-year-old Jeter said he never considered that he could be playing his final
game with the Yankees.

"You're trying to come back, trying to win the game," Jeter said. "It would
have been unfair for me to be thinking about it. We lost and it feels bad.
I'm not sitting here thinking about my future."

Rivera, who turns 41 next month, didn't want to discuss his future last night.

"Me? I'm going home," Rivera said. "We'll see. I'll tell you guys that later
on when it happens."

Pressed on the issue, Rivera repeatedly said he didn't want to talk about it.
Asked if he took a moment during Game 6 to consider that it may be his final
time wearing the uniform, Rivera smiled.

"No," Rivera said. "But I don't want to talk about it."

For Pettitte, the offseason has become an annual dance, and the 38-year-old
must decide whether he wants to return for another season.

"There's nothing more that I want to achieve in this game," Pettitte said.
"But I'm a man and I want to work and you want to do stuff and this is all I
know. I don't want to shut it down and regret not playing. That's my biggest
fear. I know now that if I'm healthy I could pitch for a while. My decision
will solely be on my family."

It will be up to Brian Cashman and Yankees ownership to decide what a
36-year-old shortstop and 41-year-old closer are worth, but the general
manager knows that those will be only two of the issues he'll need to address
in the coming months.

"That will be for the winter - and the winter is now upon us," Cashman said.
"We'll get into that here now that our season is over."
