The Yankees are turning to a familiar face in their hunt for a new pitching
coach.
Gil Patterson, who pitched for the Yankees in 1977 and coached in their
system in 2005-06, will interview for the vacant pitching coach position.
Bullpen coach Mike Harkey and Triple-A pitching coach Scott Aldred are among
the other candidates also being considered for the position.
The A's granted permission for the Yankees to speak with Patterson, who has
been Oakland's roving pitching instructor since 2007. Patterson, a
first-round pick of the Yankees in 1975 who pitched the only 10 games of his
career for them in 1977, was informed of the Yankees' interest on Monday.
"I certainly hope I get the opportunity to speak with them," Patterson told
the Daily News in a telephone interview on Monday. "It's where I started my
career. It would feel like I was going home. The Yankees have always felt
like home for me."
Patterson is the frontrunner for the A's bullpen coach job, as former bullpen
coach Ron Romanick was named to replace Curt Young as Oakland's pitching
coach. The A's will likely wait to see what happens with the Yankees and
Patterson before deciding on their bullpen coach situation.
Young, who is credited for helping Oakland's young pitchers blossom, is the
leading candidate for the Red Sox's vacant pitching coach job.
Patterson served as the Blue Jays' pitching coach from 2002-04, but he
returned to the Yankees as a minor-league pitching coach in 2005. After two
years in the Yankees' system, he was offered the job in Oakland, one he took
with the blessing of both Cashman and Senior VP of baseball operations Mark
Newman.
"When I went back (in 2005), I felt like I would stay with the Yankees
forever," Patterson said. "We'll see what happens."
