LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Yankees are considering free agent Matt Diaz as
a right-handed alternative to Brett Gardner and Curtis Granderson in the
outfield.
Diaz, who was non-tendered by the Braves last week, has been a valuable
reserve for Atlanta the last few years. He has strong platoon splits, with a
.907 career OPS against left-handers compared to .710 against right-handers.
The lefty-swinging Gardner, meanwhile, has a .691 OPS against lefties, while
Granderson checks in at a paltry .621 that looks even worse compared to his
.890 OPS against righties.
Diaz would essentially fill the shoes of Marcus Thames, who held down the
role of right-handed platoon partner in the outfield last season.
