Martin expected to be Yankees' starting catcher

Newly-signed Russell Martin is expected to be the Yankees' primary catcher next
season, with Francisco Cervelli as the likely backup. Jorge Posada, who has
been the Yankees' everyday catcher since 2000, is expected to be the primary
designated hitter.

The Yankees have two top catching prospects in Jesus Montero and Austin Romine
who are expected to get another year of seasoning in the minor leagues. However
,they could also be used as trading chips.

Martin, 27, reached a one-year agreement with the Yankees this week. He is a
two-time All-Star but he has had declining numbers for a couple seasons. In
2010 he batted .248 with five home runs and 26 RBIs in 97 games, all career
lows, and missed two months with a hip injury. He was non-tendered by the
Dodgers after the season.

Meanwhile, Yankees expect a decision from free-agent pitcher Andy Pettitte
soon as to whether he will return for one more season or retire.

Martin's old team, the Dodgers, reached an agreement with reliever Matt
Guerroer on a three-year, $12 million deal. Guerrier, who had two-year offers
at higher salaries, has a physical tomorrow with the Dodgers.
