Statistically speaking: As play began on June 1, Montero was hitting just
.229/.307/.357. That dipped as low as .214/.297/.329 on June 6. He went on to
hit .283/.324/.505 in June, .342/.441/.632 in July, .330/.379/.606 in August
and even .370/.370/.852 in six September contests. When all was said and
done, his ISO (extra bases per plate appearance) of .227 at Triple-A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was nearly as good as his .228 in Class A Advanced
Tampa and better than his .222 in Double-A Trenton in 2009.
Scouting report: After shaking off that rough start, Montero once again
proved to be one of the best pure hitters in the Minors. He can hit for
average and power, with more in the tank than he's shown in his
already-impressive Minor League career. The question remains his defense, and
whether he can be an everyday catcher in the big leagues. He's got a strong
arm, though he threw out only 23 percent of basestealers last year. He's big
and not very agile, which led to an International League-leading 15 passed
balls. He's worked very hard on that side of his game and has improved. At
best, he might be an offensive-minded Mike Piazza type, who's bat will help
people forget about any defensive deficiencies.
Upside potential: His bat is ready right now and he could get the chance to
play in the Bronx as a part-time catcher, part-time DH. Whatever position he
plays, he's got the chance to be an impact bat in the middle of any lineup in
baseball.
