The presences of Mark Teixeira and Adrian Gonzalez do not eliminate the Yankees and Red Sox, respectively, from a possible chase of Albert Pujols in the fall. The designated hitter spot means that if sufficiently motivated by a disappointing 2011, either of them could add Pujols to a lineup that already includes a solid first baseman. The White Sox already are doing that with Paul Konerko and Adam Dunn. Why not the Yankees or Red Sox? The Yankees could gain a ton of both flexibility and motivation if CC Sabathia exercises the opt-out clause in his contract after this season. He has said he doesn't plan to do that, but he hasn't said he won't do that. And the Red Sox seem unlikely to offer David Ortiz a major extension after this season, the last one on his contract. Ortiz, a hard 36, delivered 32 homers and 102 RBIs a year ago but knows he has no guarantees beyond September. "I'm just going to focus on playing baseball right now,'' Ortiz told reporters after arriving for spring training in Fort Myers, Fla. "Whatever happens, happens later on but right now my goal is have a great start and make sure we win another World Series this year. I'm very excited.
