Yanks' Rivera becomes first pitcher to make 1,000 appearances with one team


Mariano Rivera became the first pitcher in Major League Baseball to
make 1,000 appearances on the mound with the same team (he also becomes the
15th pitcher in MLB history to appear in 1,000 games overall - the 14 players
ahead of him all made appearances for more than one team.

The milestone allowed Rivera to add to other honors he's received in his
lengthy career, including having the most postseason saves and World Series
saves in MLB annals, as well.

Rivera reached the 1,000 appearance mark Wednesday against the Toronto Blue
Jays.

"It's a blessing to be able to be on the same team and do that," Rivera told
reporters after the Yanks' 7-3 win, including him retiring the side in the
ninth to seal the victory. "It's not too often you see that. But the most
important thing is that we won."

Rivera said he was surprised to have reached such a lofty—and lengthy—
achievement that came with spending the past 16 seasons with the Yankees..

"It is (surprising) because you've got to have the right combination," Rivera
said. "The organization you're with (has to be) willing to keep you and
you've got to do the job and take care of yourself. All of that has to be in
place."

The honors will continue for Rivera: with just three more appearances, the
41-year-old will pass Rich "Goose" Gossage for 14th in all-time appearances.
Jesse Orosco is at the top of the list with 1,252 appearances.
