MLB looks into Colon procedure http://0rz.tw/jUyFq NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball recently reviewed Bartolo Colon's controversial stem-cell procedure, the Newark-based Star-Ledger reported, though nothing has materialized regarding their findings. Leonel Liriano, a physician based in the Dominican Republic, told the newspaper via e-mail on Tuesday that an investigator from MLB recently took him up on his offer to watch video of the procedures done on Colon's right elbow and shoulder. That video, Liriano told the Star-Ledger, shows doctors did not use human growth hormone during the treatments. MLB and Yankees spokesmen had no comment. Last year, Colon had doctors repair ligament damage and a torn rotator cuff in hopes of reviving his career. The New York Times first reported a couple of weeks ago that Dr. Joseph R. Purita, who has used HGH in similar procedures, headed those procedures beginning in April 2010. MLB has since been investigating the matter. Purita, who denied using HGH in Colon's case, said at the time that he traveled to Colon's home in the Dominican Republic for the procedure, which consisted of taking fat and bone marrow stem cells from the 38-year-old and injecting them back into his right shoulder and elbow. HGH is a banned substance under MLB's Drug Policy. Colon has previously deferred to the MLB Players Association when asked about the procedure. Signed to a Minor League contract this last offseason, Colon -- who celebrated a birthday on Tuesday -- made the Yankees' Opening Day roster as a reliever, then jumped into the rotation once Phil Hughes landed on the disabled list. Despite only combining for 19 starts from 2008-09, then being out of the big leagues last year, Colon has a 3.72 ERA in seven starts this season. Prior to Wednesday's series finale against the Blue Jays, manager Joe Girardi announced Colon would be given an extra day of rest and will start Monday against the Athletics, with CC Sabathia pitching against the Mariners on Sunday. With that, Sabathia would be on normal rest and Colon would have six days between starts. "He's been going at it hard for us, just like CC," Girardi said. "It allows CC to go on his fifth day, and then [Colon will] get an extra day the next time, so we just decided to do that. And Bartolo will get another extra day the next time, as well."
