1.The Flip
Oct. 13, 2001: Abracadabra! Jeter's out-of-thin-air flip play to Jorge
Posada, with the Yankees clinging to a 1-0 lead in a do-or-die Game 3 of the
2001 ALDS, is the most magical moment of his career.
2.Mr. November
Oct. 31/Nov. 1, 2001: Jeter earns one of his lasting nicknames with a
walk-off homer just past midnight in Game 4 of the Fall Classic, the first
time baseball that counts had ever been played in November.
3.The Dive
July 1, 2004: Nothing says courage like Jeter's dive into the old Stadium
stands in the top of the 12th inning against the Red Sox. He emerges cut up
and bruised -- but with the ball -- en route to a dramatic 13-inning win.
4.The Hit King
Sept. 11, 2009: With his 2,722nd career hit, Jeter puts Orioles pitcher Chris
Tillman in the record books -- and passes Gehrig as the Yanks' all-time
leader.
5.The Maier Game
Oct. 9, 1996: Jeter's fly out-turned-home run -- after it's snagged by
12-year-old Yankees fan Jeffrey Maier -- is the turning point of Game 1 of
the ALCS against the Orioles.
6.Subway Series MVP
Oct. 25, 2000: On Bobby Jones' first pitch in Game 4 of the Subway World
Series, Jeter goes deep -- en route to a 3-2 win and an eventual series MVP
award.
7.The Captain
June 3, 2003: Following in the footsteps of Lou Gehrig, Thurman Munson and
Don Mattingly, Jeter is named the 11th captain in Yankees history.
8.The Speech
Sept. 21, 2008: Surrounded by his teammates, The Captain addresses Yankees
fans after the final game at the House That Ruth Built with an inspiring,
unscripted speech over the PA system.
9.Ring No. 1
October, 1996: Jeter gets the first of his five ticker-tape parades (so far)
after the Rookie of the Year helps lead the Bombers to their first World
Series title since 1978.
10.All-Star MVP
July 11, 2000: How many Yankees have won All-Star Game MVP honors? Just one. A
go-ahead, two-run single (off Al Leiter) during a 3-for-3 day is more than
enough for The Captain to take home the trophy.
