http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2011/09/01/call-ups-add-depth/ Rosters expand today, and the Yankees seem prepared to add four players, most of whom simply add depth to areas that are a little thin right now. Jesus Montero Easily the most discussed of the September call-ups, Montero is the Yankees top hitting prospect, and he’s the one call-up who could conceivably play his way into fairly steady playing time. Joe Girardi’s made it clear that he doesn’t plan to catch Montero regularly, but he’ll get chances to hit as a DH. Chris Dickerson The Yankees fifth outfielder for much of the season, Dickerson returns to that familiar role. As it is, the team has been using Andruw Jones at DH against lefties, leaving the Yankees without a true backup outfielder on those days. That seems to be Dickerson’s role: Defense, speed and insurance. He could be a strong platoon option, if this outfielder weren’t so left-heavy as it is. Brandon Laird Primarily a third baseman — though he can play all four corners — Laird obviously gives the Yankees infield some additional depth while Alex Rodriguez is banged up and Derek Jeter has just returned from a mild knee injury. How much longer before Ramiro Pena joins the mix as well? Scott Proctor Easily the biggest surprise of the reported call-ups, Proctor gives the Yankees a seventh reliever for a bullpen that had been a man short for a few days. He was signed to a minor league deal not so long ago, and pitched in the majors with Atlanta earlier this year. I’m a bit surprised the Yankees didn’t call up a true long man — Lance Pendleton would have been an easy addition — but maybe they’re just going to wait until Hector Noesi can be recalled.
