http://atmlb.com/uaojcu Inbox: Burnett on the move this offseason? Beat reporter Bryan Hoch answers Yankees questions from fans How likely is it that general manager Brian Cashman will look to move A.J. Burnett? More importantly, are there teams out there that would be willing to eat some of the money off his contract and take him? -- Jonathan J., Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. On Tuesday, Cashman said of Burnett, "If he's with us, he's in the rotation." Was that a slip? Cashman meant that he wouldn't consider Burnett as a reliever, but he opened the door for questions about the Yankees entertaining any trade involving Burnett. "Let me just tell you this: I am open-minded," Cashman said. "If anyone wants to approach me on anyone on this roster that doesn't have a full no-trade clause, the worst I can tell them is no." Still, is there a team out there willing to take on the remaining two years and $33 million on Burnett's contract? It seems unlikely, even in what is perceived as a thin free-agent market for pitchers. Cashman also noted he'd be hard-pressed to replace Burnett's innings (190 1/3 this past season). CC Sabathia must lose some weight, and last offseason he did. Do you think he realizes he just wore out as the pounds went on? -- Ron E., Bronx., N.Y. Sabathia acknowledged that he got "a little lax" with conditioning during the season, and he's going to try to trim down again before pitchers and catchers report. If he can cut out the Cap'n Crunch (and friends) to get those 25 pounds back off, that'd be good for his health and his career. But let's remember that Sabathia was a big guy even before he came to the Yankees, so this battle of the bulge is always going to be part of the equation with him. Considering how bad Nick Swisher has been in the playoffs, I just don't understand why the Yankees picked up his option. Is he going to be the Yankees' right fielder next year? -- Mike B., Princeton, N.J. Cashman said that Swisher's $10.25 million option "was an easy call" and that postseason numbers (.160, 16-for-100 as a Yankee) had nothing to do with it. It definitely sounds like you can pencil him in for right field, though it's been speculated the Yankees might listen on trade offers. "He's been one of the better offensive right fielders in the game ever since he's been here," Cashman said. "We're lucky to have him." What are the chances of the Yankees signing Mark Buehrle? He is solid and a lefty to boot. Also, he could probably be had much cheaper than C.J. Wilson or Yu Darvish. -- Bob I., Cranston, R.I. You can expect the Yankees to be in on Buehrle, eventually. The priority is starting pitching, but locking up Sabathia frees them from the desperation you saw last year after Cliff Lee went to Philadelphia. The Yankees plan to take their time a little, but Buehrle has been very consistent in the American League, which is a huge plus. He made $14 million last year, so he's not in the bargain-basement bin, but Buehrle's deal should be shorter term than some other choices. He said in September that he'd like to pitch two or three more years. Who do you think the designated hitter will be next year? -- Krista H., Albuquerque, N.M. Not Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder, and probably not Jorge Posada either. It sounds like the door is wide open for Jesus Montero to grab some big league at-bats, and the DH role may be his landing spot with Russell Martin in line as the starting catcher. Alex Rodriguez will also see his DH at-bats increase as his contract continues. Did the team use up Montero's rookie status, or would he be still eligible for AL Rookie of the Year for 2012? -- Michael D., Madawaska, Maine Montero had just 61 at-bats after he was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sept. 1, when rosters expanded to 40 players. Players are considered rookies unless they've exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the big leagues; or accumulated more than 45 days on the 25-man rosters of Major League clubs (excluding time on the disabled list). Although A-Rod has a huge contract, what can be done -- if anything -- to get him hitting again? -- Aaron D., Glendale, N.Y. Winter rest should help him get past some of the injuries that slowed him this year. Rodriguez tried not to complain, but he was really beat up down the stretch, and the Yankees knew it. It sounds like the sprained left thumb may have hurt him the most, affecting his timing at the plate. Rodriguez is a much better player than he showed in 2011, and that ability should still be there, if he can stay healthy. What are your opinions on David Robertson? Will Rafael Soriano be the setup man for Mariano Rivera or will it be Robertson? -- Alyssa R., Philadelphia What's not to like? Robertson was an All-Star, and deservedly so. Soriano may have the bigger contract, but you'd think that job would be Robertson's heading into camp, even allowing that there may be some regression from his great 2011 (1.08 ERA in 70 appearances). Either way, the Yankees' bullpen is a strength at this point. And like Cashman said on Tuesday, it should only get better with Joba Chamberlain's return.
