If I had to guess, I'd say yes, but only to a certain level. We learned last
week that general manager Brian Cashman has made preliminary contact with
Wilson's agent, who also happens to represent free agent Roy Oswalt, but that
shouldn't be surprising at this stage. There will be plenty more calls in the
future, and we already know that starting pitching is the Yankees' main focus.

Having locked in CC Sabathia with his new extension removes some of the
urgency, though you could see Wilson being the talk of the Winter Meetings in
a month. Cashman identified Wilson as the market's top free-agent pitcher, a
view shared by many, but that doesn't necessarily mean the Yankees want to
shell out an A.J. Burnett-type contract to get him into the rotation. There's
no guarantee Wilson won't be wearing Rangers red, white and blue come spring;
the lefty recently said that there's a "great chance" he'll be back in Texas.

This has been a question we've been getting a lot lately -- and hey, if
you're going to dream, why not dream big? If the Mariners showed the
slightest sign of interest in dealing their ace, I'd expect Cashman to elbow
his way to the front of the line in hopes of putting together the package
that would dress Hernandez in pinstripes.

But the Mariners have been insistent that their ace isn't going anywhere,
that he continues to be their best asset and they believe they can build a
competitive team with his talents at the head of the rotation. Hernandez will
be 26 in April and is under a contract that the Mariners say they can handle
($58 million through 2014), and that's a very affordable price when you
consider what kind of pitcher he is. The Yankees are going to have to look
elsewhere for their rotation answers.

I'm not sure what you can do, other than roll the dice with the guys who have
done it for you all year. It's not like you can yell at the guys and tell
them to get more hits; they're proven big league hitters, and few were
expecting offense to be the problem with this team.

The Yankees like to talk about looking at performance over a large sample
size, and when you look at the regular season, they didn't score the
second-most runs in baseball by accident. Clearly, that wasn't the case in
all of their five postseason games this year, when it all gets magnified.

That inconsistency is also why their season ended early. They scored just
nine runs in their three losses to Detroit, compared to 19 runs in the two
wins. Still, I didn't get the sense that the guys were grinding their bat
handles into sawdust during the American League Division Series. I'd point
out you'll face mostly elite pitching at that stage and don't get the tomato
can staffs to beat up on.

Manager Joe Girardi talked after the ALDS about how his players had good
at-bats, but they just didn't hit into a lot of luck. Maybe he's right, or
maybe the Yankees just played below their skill level. Either way, they'll
have Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Nick Swisher and friends back for their
next run at the playoffs, so they have to take their chances and hope that
the results improve.

This market typically won't develop until the bigger names are off the table,
but they should have a few choices. Some of the names include Michael
Gonzalez, John Grabow, Darren Oliver, Arthur Rhodes, J.C. Romero (whom they
had at Triple-A this year), George Sherrill and Brian Tallet. Cashman said
he'd like to run into someone to add to the mix with Boone Logan, but the
main focus will be on the rotation.

designated-hitter spot would be ideal to begin breaking him in and
accumulating big league at-bats.

for us or he can obviously be a DH for us, or he can be a lethal bat off the

Major League managers and coaches voted on Gold Gloves. It was the first time
since 2007 and just the third time since 1997 that the Yankees have been shut
out. Teixeira, Cano and Brett Gardner were finalists, and Gardner's loss to
the Royals' Alex Gordon may have been the biggest surprise of those three.
