20) Murcer traded. Bobby Murcer was considered to be the next Mickey Mantle
and was assured there was no way the Yankees would trade him. Three days
after he told GM Gabe Paul he'd move to right field with the assurance he'd
be a Yankee the rest of his career,Murcer was traded for Bobby Bonds in 1975.
Bonds spent one year with the Yanks, while Murcer spent the next four-plus
seasons in San Francisco and Chicago before returning to the Bronx in 1979.
19) Sabathia stays. The contract CC Sabathia signed with the Yankees in 2008
included an opt-out clause that allowed him to become a free agent after the
2011 season.Convincing Sabathia to not opt out was Priority No.1 for the
Yankees.Sabathia announced over Twitter he would not exercise the clause and
that he signed an extension that included an additional year on his orginal
seven-year contract.
18) Scott Brosius. When Brosius was acquired for Kenny Rogers in 1997,he went
on to provide more production and thrills than anyone could have imagined.
Brosius batted .300 with 19 home runs and 98 RBIs in '98,and hit a memorable
home run off Padres closer Trevor Hoffman in Game 3 of the World Series. In
Game 5 of the '01 Fall Classic,Brosius hit a two-run home run in the bottom
of the ninth to tie the game and set up an extra-inning Yankees win.
17) David Wells. "Boomer"signed with the Yankees as a free agent in 1997.Wells
authored his signature season in the following years, going 18-4 with a 3.49
ERA,including a perfect game on May 17.
16) Andy Pettitte. Pettitte left the Yankees as a free agent after 2003 season
to pitch for the Houston Astros and live closer to his home in Deer Park,
Texas. However, the allure of the Bronx, where Pettitte won four World
Championships,was too strong to ignore,so he returned in 2007 on a one-year
deal. One of the greatest big-game pitchers in franchise history,Pettitte won
one more World Series in 2009 and retired as a Yankee in 2011.
15) Rivera re-signs. Arguably the Yankees' most indispensable player,Rivera
agreed to a new two-year deal after becoming a free agent following the 2010
season.Rivera continued his dominance as the best closer who ever played,
validating that status by becoming baseball's all-time saves leader on
September 19,2011 at Yankee Stadium.
14) Jeter re-signs. Life in Yankees Universe without Derek Jeter wearing
pinstripes is like corn flakes without the milk.Jeter became a free agent after
the 2010 season, the worst statistically of his career, but reached an agreement
on a three-year deal,with an option for a fourth,to remain in the Bronx.Jeter
bounced back by batting .297 with 162 hits while becoming the latest member of
the 3000-hit club.
13) Nick Swisher. The Yankees pulled off one of their finest coups on November
13,2008 when they sent utility man Wilson Betemit and Minor League pitchers
Jeffrey Marquez and Jhonny Nunez to the White Sox for Swisher. The plan was to
play Swisher at first base until the Yankees signed free agent Mark Teixeira.
As a result, the versatile Swisher became the everyday right-fielder,and one of
the team's most productive and popular players.
12) Catfish Hunter. Newly-minted Yankees owner George Steinbrenner took full
advantage of the new free agency system by signing six-time All-Stat and
reigning AL Cy Young award winner Jim "Catfish" Hunter,on New Year's Eve in
1974,to what was then the richest contract in baseball.Hunter led the league
in wins (23) for the second consecutive season and helped the Yankees to three
straight AL Pennants,and two World Championships,from 1976 to 1978.
11) Dave Winfield. Five years after spending big for Reggie Jackson,George
Steinbrenner made headlines with his blockbuster signing of Winfield to a
10-year,$23 million contract.Despite a public feud with the Boss,Winfield
remained one of the best players in the game during his Yankees tenure. He and
Steinbrenner eventually made amends and Winfield has been a guest at the
Yankees' annual Old Times'Day festivities.
10) Curtis Granderson. The Yankees acquired Granderson on December 9,2009 as
part of a three-team trade with Detroit and Arizona. The Yanks sent Phil Coke
and Austin Jackson to Detroit, and starting pitcher Ian Kennedy to Arizona.
In 2011,Granderson became the first player to hit 40 home runs,10 triples and
steal 25 bases in one season, and finished fourth in balloting for the American
League MVP.
9) Roger Clemens. The famous story is told of Blue Jays GM Gord Ash explaining
who he wanted in exchange for Clemens:"Wells,Lloyd and Bush." Yankees GM Brian
Cashman's knees buckled upon hearing the price for the five-time Cy Young
Award winner.David Wells was sent to Toronto with Graeme Lloyd and Homer Bush
for the Rocket in early 1999.Clemens won his first World Series that season
and another Cy Young award in 2001.
8) Sparky Lyle. The Yankees acquired Lyle from the Red Sox in exchange for
Danny Cater and a player to be named later(Mario Guerrero) prior to the 1972
season.Inwhat proved to be one of the most one-sided deals in franchise
history,Lyle established himself as one of the game's best fireman. He won two
World Series in the Bronx in additon to becoming the first reliever to win the
AL Cy Young award in 1977.
7) Alex Rodriguez. During the 2003 offseason,Aaron Boone suffered a serious
knee injury during a pickup basketball game. The Yankees then moved to pursue
the reigning AL MVP.After A-Rod assured them he had no problem moving from
shortstop to third base, the Yankees acquired him for Alfonso Soriano and a
player to be named later(Joaquin Arias).A-Rod collected two more MVP awards
('05,'07)before winning his first World Series in '09.
6) Mark Teixeira. The Yankees had traded for Nick Swisher to play first base
in 2009,and spent a lot of money to recruit CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. It
was assumed Teixeira was headed to the rival Red Sox,but Yankees GM Brian
Cashman worked underground to ink the prolific slugger to an eight-year deal.
Teixeira not only hit 39 homers to tie for the AL lead, his glove provided
stability at first bases and to this day remains a force in the lineup and in
the field.
5) CC Sabathia/A.J. Burnett. After missing the playoffs for the first time in
13 years, the Yankees opened their checkbook to recruit the best free agents.
Their top target was Sabathia, who virtually carried the Brewers to the playoffs
in 2008.Not only did Sabathia come to New York,he was followed Burnett,an
18-game winner in '08.The two combined with Andy Pettitte the Bronx its 27th
World Championship.
4) Tino Martinez. Martinez batted .293 with 31 home runs and 111 RBIs in 1995,
and helped lead the Mariners to a five-game ALDS win over the Yankees.Seeking
a replacement for Don Mattingly, the Yankees sent Sterling Hitchcock and Russ
Davis to Seattle for Martinez,Jeff Nelson and Jim Mecir.Martinez Provided a
power bat and golden glove at first base, while Nelson was part of a deep
bullpen that helped forge the dynasty of the late 1990s.
3) Paul O'Neill. The Yankees traded one of their bright young players,Roberto
Kelly, straight up to Cincinnati for O'Neill on November 3,1992.while Kelly
became an All-Star with the Yankees in '92 and the Reds in '93,O'Neill was en
route to winning a batting title before a player’strike interrupted the 1994
season.O'Neill would later became the emotional leader of a team that would
win four World Championships form 1996-2000 before retiring after 2001 season.
2) Reggie Jackson. After his Yankees were swept in four games by the
Cincinnati Reds in the 1976 World Series,Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was
determined to bring a big star to the big city. The Boss had his sights on
Jackson and convinced him to sign a five-year deal worth 2.96 million on
Noember 29,1976.Jackson would power the Yankees to consecutive World
Championships, including his famous three home runs in Game 6 of the 1977 Fall
Classic.
1) Babe Ruth. It's a transaction that lives in Yankees lore and Red Sox infamy.
Fed up with Ruth’s demands for a raise after the 1919 season,Red Sox owner
Harry Frazee sold him to the Yankees for $125000 ($1.37 million in today’s
dollar terms). The Great Bambino went on to became arguably the greatest
baseball player who ever lived.
