When the Yankees signed their 1st round pick Ty Hensley last night they
officially signed all of their top 10 round draft picks and surprisingly had
$400K left over after they did it. That money can now be spend on draft picks
after the 10th round and on a related note, the Yankees are expected to
announce the signing of their 24th overall draft pick, Jose Mesa Jr,
according to his Twitter account.

Mesa Jr. was not expected to sign from the start. Before the draft even began
he announced that if he was not picked up in the top 10 rounds there was no
chance that he would sign. Draft picks after the 10th round are limited to
$100K draft bonus unless there is money over from the pool teams are assigned
for their top 10 picks. There was and now Mesa may be the first of a couple
of pleasant surprises.

Without knowing how much his bonus is yet, we won’t know how much the
Yankees benefited from signing Hensley under budget. He can technically sign
for up to $500K, but if it was less than that then he might not be the last
signing announcement that we hear before now and the end of the deadline at
5:00 p.m.

Mesa is the 18-year-old, 6-foot-4, 215-pound son of former Major Leaguer Jose
Mesa. He can hit 95 mph with his fastball and is said to already have a
