標題[外電] Cashman on Pineda, Nunez, Long and Rod

We’ve known for quite some time that Michael Pineda’s future is murky, and
we’ve known that his role for 2013 is uncertain. Speaking on Ian O’Connor’
s radio show yesterday, Brian Cashman addressed just how little the Yankees
can count on Pineda next season.

“We have to keep him off our radar for now,” Cashman said. “We’re talking
June of next year.”
Pineda had shoulder surgery after feeling some soreness at the end of spring
training. The history of pitchers coming back from such a surgery is spotty
at best, and obviously the Yankees were expecting big things when they agreed
to trade Jesus Montero for Pineda.

A few other notes from Cashman’s appearance with O’Connor:
Cashman said it’s “wasted energy” to speculate on possible trade
destinations for Alex Rodriguez. “I don’t see us doing anything there,”
Cashman said. “I don’t anticipate it. If someone wants to make phone
calls, we’re more than willing to do all that stuff with any of our players,
and that’s fine. You can run into something that way.”
Speaking of Rodriguez, Cashman said the same thing he did at the end of
the playoffs: Rodriguez is no longer an MVP candidate, but he’s still an
above average third baseman. “Is he a superstar at that position? No,”
Cashman said. “But I think when anybody signed that contract, expecting him
to be at that level at that age would be unrealistic also.”

Cashman made it clear that Eduardo Nunez will remain at shortstop. “I don
’t look at Nunez being valuable in an everyday role other than shortstop,
and we have a shortstop,” Cashman said. “In terms of everyday status for
Nuney, I don’t see one as long as Derek Jeter is sitting there.”
Why not put Nunez in the outfield, where the Yankees have several
openings? “All the calls of putting him in left field, I don’t understand,”
Cashman said.

Once again, Cashman said that Kevin Long will not be fired because of the
postseason letdown. “Kevin Long is without question one of the best hitting
coaches in the game,” Cashman said. “And what took place here is a
collective failure, not an individual one, and no one is going to be pointed
at as a scapegoat.”

Cashman downplayed CC Sabathia’s upcoming trip to Dr. James Andrews. “If
he has anything, it’s not considered major, but it’s obviously the time of
year to really focus on it,” Cashman said.
