as source says Los Angeles will likely not attempt to keep Hunter.

Torii Hunter, free agent late of the Angels, could find himself in the Bronx.


With Nick Swisher likely headed out of town as a free agent, the Yankees will
be in the market for a new right fielder this winter.

Will Torii Hunter be the answer?

According to a source, the 37-year-old free agent was not expected to
receive a qualifying offer from the Angels before Friday's midnight deadline,
meaning the Yankees wouldn’t have to sacrifice a draft pick if they were to
sign the four-time All-Star.

The source added that the Yankees are interested in Hunter, a nine-time Gold
Glove winner who would add a much-needed righthanded bat to the lineup. Teams
are permitted to speak with free agents now, though they can not discuss
financial terms until Saturday.

Hunter hit .313/.365/.451 with 16 home runs, 92 RBI and 81 runs scored in
140 games with the Angels this past season, the final year of his five-year,
$90 million contract.

The Angels were not expected to offer Hunter a $13.3 million qualifying
offer, the source said, as they were afraid he would accept it.  The fact
that the Yankees wouldn’t have to give up a pick makes Hunter an attractive
option, not to mention that Hunter won’t be looking for a long-term deal.

Hunter is expected to seek a two-year deal, though his desire to win a
championship will likely reduce the field to only a handful of teams.
