The New York Yankees today announced they have claimed catcher Eli Whiteside
off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.

Whiteside, 33, appeared in 12 games over two stints with the 2012 World
Champion Giants, going 1-for-11. He played the majority of the season with
Triple-A Fresno, batting .224 (45-for-201) with 27 runs, 11 doubles, one home
run and 20 RBI in 60 games. He also caught 25-of-69 (36.2%) potential base
stealers with the Grizzlies.

Since 2009, he has compiled a 3.32 catchers ERA, the lowest such mark among
all Major League catchers over the four-year span (min. 1,200.0 innings
played).

Originally selected by Baltimore in the sixth round of the 2001 First-Year
Player Draft, Whiteside has appeared in 208 career Major League games with
the Orioles (2005) and Giants (2009-12), batting .215 (105-for-489) with 21
doubles, 10 home runs and 43 RBI. In his Major League career, he has caught
23.6 percent of attempted base stealers (33-of-140). He was also behind the
plate for Jonathan Sanchez’s no-hitter on July 10, 2009 vs. San Diego.
