A.J. Cole

右投右打21歲，身高6呎4吋，體重 180磅，出身佛羅里達Oviedo高中。

少棒時期站游擊，曾被BASEBALL AMERICA選進12歲級明星隊。

最大武器為兩種握法的曲球與95英哩速球。

2010年選秀會上因Cole已得到 University of Miami入學許可與投球內
容不夠穩定，使他的順位從首輪前中段掉到第四輪 116順位才被國民選
走。如果Cole選擇進入大學，那他必須等到2013年才能再次投入選秀；
最後Cole接受 Rizzo開的2M加入國民。2M創下第四輪選秀簽約金紀錄，
其實也是首輪中段左右的價碼。

2011年底與Brad Peacock/Tom Milone/Derek Norris一起被打包到運動
家換回Gio Gonzalez，2013年初經過三方交易案又回到國民農場。

A.J. Cole is proof that you can indeed go home again. Initially drafted
by the Nationals, he was sent to Oakland in the December 2011 trade for
Gio Gonzalez. He spent a year with the A’s, struggling in the California
League, then righting the ship back down a level, before being sent back
to Washington in the three-team deal that sent Michael Morse to Seattle.
Despite Cole’s struggles in Class A Advanced ball, he still has a
considerable amount of upside. He’s tall and projectable with a fastball
that hits the mid-90s with good life, and there could be room for more as
he matures. His secondary stuff hasn’t caught up to the fastball, but he
does show a feel for a fading changeup and has a curve that is slurvy at
times. Patience can be a virtue with pitchers and if Cole can improve his
secondary offerings, he still has plenty of time to fulfill his potential
as a top-of-the-rotation starter.

It often takes time for those high-ceilinged, hard-throwing high schoolers
to develop into pitchers. For some, it takes longer than others and while
Cole fits more into the latter category, there's still a lot to like about
the projectable right-hander. Clearly, the Nationals agree as they
re-acquired the player they initially drafted during this past offseason
after sending him to the A's in the December 2011 deal that brought Gio
Gonzalez to Washington. He still has the big arm that made him a big-time
prospect in the 2010 Draft, delivering fastballs that touch 96 mph with
good movement. His curve can be a bit slurvy, but has the chance to be at
least an average power breaking ball. He has good feel for a fading changeup.
There is still plenty of time for him to develop his secondary stuff and
overall command and become the frontline starter many think he has the
potential to become.

要將高天花板的速球派高中生培養成投手常花上許多時間。對某些人，

BASEBALL AMERICA OAK TOP10 Prospects(#3)

Background:
A potential first-rounder going into 2010, Cole slid but still netted
a fourth-round-record $2 million bonus from the Nationals. After coming
to Oakland with Tom Milone, Derek Norris and Brad Peacock in the
Gio Gonzalez trade last offseason, Cole ranked last in the California
League with a 7.82 ERA before he was demoted to low Class A in May.
Following a rough first start, he smoothed out his mechanics in Burlington
and would have led the Midwest League in ERA (2.07) if he had logged
enough innings to qualify.

Scouting Report:
Cole’s fastball ranges from 92-97 mph with some sinking and cutting
action. His slurvy curveball lacks consistency because he keeps tinkering
with grips for it, but it shows good bite when it’s on and he tightened
its rotation in instructional league. He has nice feel for his changeup,
which has some fade and improved after his demotion. Cole’s Cal League
problems came because he opened up too quickly in his delivery, dragged
his arm and over-rotated, and left pitches up in the strike zone. The
A’s like how he comes after hitters.

球探報告：

The Future:
With his power arm, Cole has more upside than any A’s pitching prospect
and projects as a possible frontline starter.

A.J.Cole had a disappointing start to the year as he absolutely bombed in
his promotion to High-A.  He posted a 0-7 record and a brutal 7.82 ERA.
However, if you dig under the surface stats, things were not nearly as
bleak.  His strikeout rate was a respectable 7.34 per nine and his control
was excellent at 2.37 walks per nine.  So, what happened?

Cole的開季表現確實令人失望。毫無疑問他在高階1A被炸得體無完膚，
0-7  7.82ERA。然而若撇開表面數據不看，好像也沒那麼絕望。 K/9是

It looked like his curve ball deserted him and he became uncomfortable
throwing it and relied too much on his fastball.  The fastball was very
straight and did not have any sink and batters teed off.  The curve ball,
which is not a classic 12-6 or 11-5 offering, was very inconsistent.
To me, it looks like a spike or knuckle curve which can be very difficult
to control.  Ultimately, Cole might be better served by throwing a more
classic curve or switching to a slider.

看來不舒服的曲球使他必須仰賴過多速球，但速球顯得直線呆板也完全
無法下沉，讓打者們揮得很開心。Cole的曲球不是典型的12-6或11-5，
卻投得極不協調。就我看來，似乎是單指或彈指曲球的控制相當困難。
最終Cole也許乾脆回頭去丟典型曲球或轉丟滑球會比較好。

As bad as the first six weeks went, the remainder of the year was great as
the A’s decided to move Cole back to Low-A where he dominated with a 9.60
K/9 and a 1.79 BB/9.  The curve looked better and the changeup looked like
a real swing and miss pitch.  So, we are left with an obvious question…
Is Cole really a prospect with Major League potential?

開季悲慘的六週過去後運動家決定讓他回到1A，他也繳出屠殺級成績；
9.6的K/9與1.79的BB/9。曲球看來變棒了，變速也能拐到揮棒落空。因
此難免我們得問個問題，Cole真的是個擁有大聯盟潛力的新秀嗎？

I still really like the potential of Cole as the arsenal is good and he
throw strikes.  He does need to work on his breaking pitch as it can’t be
just a chase pitch and instead he needs to learn to throw it for strikes.
It’ll be interesting to see if the A’s start him in High-A or move him
directly to Double-A.

我還是相當喜歡Cole的資質，他的武器很棒而且他會丟好球。但他得加
強他的變化球，使其不只是用來搶好球數而已，還要能三振掉打者。我
很期待看看運動家會讓他從高階1A開始或者直上2A。

MINOR LEAGUE BALL OAK TOP20 Prospects(#3) GRADE B

Hammered in High-A, turned things around in Low-A and was still decently
young for the level at age 20. Remains a very high upside arm with a
chance to be a number two starter, but we have to see how he handles a
return to Stockton.

因在高階1A遭受重擊而回到1A的Cole依然十分年輕，還是擁有值得高度
期待的手臂；也有機會成為二號。但我們得好好觀察他再次回到高階1A
會繳出什麼表現。

Cole的球探報告從選秀前到今年幾乎沒變。直球偏高，變化球無法控制
，投球機制不穩定。他也是標準的慢熱型，09年11月在 University of
 Miami出賽時球速甚至掉到88，隨著時間過去才慢慢回到95。

如果2A到3A適應不良那可以理解，但1A跟高階1A的落差應不至於這麼大
。Cole自己說過在 California League投到節奏都不見了，看來心理問
題還是比較嚴重。

話說 bleach report在1/15刊出一篇文列舉各隊的untouchable list，
