LHP Fu-Te Ni is giving Detroit some hope he can be a second lefty out of the
club's bullpen. Ni worked two scoreless innings Sunday and in his first week
with the club has a 1.80 ERA for four games totaling five innings. The
sidearmer has a relatively flat fastball but it's a different look and he
runs it up there at 89-91 mph. His curve looks workable, and he's developing
a changeup to use against right-handed hitters. He retired Minnesota's C Joe
Mauer and 1B Justin Morneau back-to-back twice during the weekend, which
other Detroit pitchers had problems doing. He has one walk and seven
strikeouts.
