Middlesbrough have signed winger Boudewijn Zenden on a season-long loan
from Barclaycard Premiership rivals Chelsea.
The Holland international has yet to feature for Chelsea this season and
follows Danny Mills and Gaizka Mendieta in joining Boro on loan.
Zenden’s arrival was announced just a few minutes before Boro kicked off
their Barclaycard Premiership match against Leeds at the Riverside.
He was a fixture in the Chelsea team for his first season at Stamford Bridge
but began to drift to the fringes of Claudio Ranieri’s squad last season.
With the big-money arrivals of Juan Sebastian Veron, Joe Cole, Damien Duff
and Geremi, Zenden’s chances of regular first-team football looked limited.
Zenden revealed he had other offers but preferred to join Middlesbrough.
He said: “I have to admit that talking to the manager did it. Everybody
knows the situation at Chelsea and for me to be playing here is the perfect
solution.
“I didn’t know whether I would get a game and as a player it’s important
to play every week, especially for me with Euro 2004 coming up.”
