Kidd becomes a free agent, and the pitches begin
Jason Kidd had made up his mind...until he let one coach walk into his living
room. "He wanted to go to Cal but we were still entertaining visits," said
Gordon Johnson, Kidd's former St. Joseph Notre Dame high school assistant
basketball coach, recalling when Kidd was the top high school recruit in the
country."We had a home visit and Roy Williams came in and made such a strong
pitch that it was just unbelievable. We end up walking over to the bedroom
and (Kidd) said, `If another coach comes in like that, I don't know what I am
going to do. I wasn't expecting it to be like this.' "

An 18-year-old Kidd was stalked for years by college coaches from around the
country. After not initially having California on his top-five list, Kidd
changed his mind the summer before his senior year. He would attend Cal and
stay close to his Oakland home. However,it wasn't an easy decision.He granted
only two home visits in 1991, to Kansas and Cal, and Williams nearly lured
Kidd away with his pitch.

Twelve years later, Kidd finds himself having to choose all over again.Monday
night at midnight, Kidd became the top free agent on the market - since Tim
Duncan will sign a long-term extension with the Spurs, his agent confirmed
yesterday.

Kidd's current list includes the Nets, Spurs, Mavericks and Nuggets. The Nets
can offer Kidd the most money - with 12.5 percent annual bumps compared to 10
percent from other teams - perhaps around $100 million to $102 million for
six years depending on where the salary cap is set. Of the other three, only
San Antonio has the cap space and championship resume Kidd is looking for.
Then again, nobody outside the Kidd camp really knows what he will do.

"Does anybody know?" said Nets president Rod Thorn, who hopes to hear from
Kidd's agent, Jeff Schwartz, very soon. "We will have to see now, all the
rhetoric doesn't mean anything anymore. He has been around the players, the
administration and the coaches(with the Nets). This is not a selling job here
.This is about where he wants to be.Very simple…where do you want to play?"

At midnight, any team could have begun recruiting Kidd by calling him,sending
a package or even knocking on his door like Orlando GM John Gabriel and head
coach Doc Rivers did with Antonio Davis two summers ago. Kidd plans to visit
San Antonio later this month and he could be greeted like Duncan and Grant
Hill were in Orlando in 2000. That was when they saw a monster poster of them
in Orlando uniforms and the slogan "Imagine" hanging on the side of an
airplane hangar at the Orlando airport.When the two visited the team's sports
complex, every employee and even every child in the daycare center there had
Magic jerseys on with their names on them.

Kidd could also get a star-studded video or a yacht ride from a team, like
what the Knicks did with Allan Houston - successfully - and Brian Grant.Kidd,
though, has said he doesn't want to be romanced. He wants to win.

"Free agents we have talked to want to know that the commitment to winning a

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who didn't plan to do anything at midnight with
Kidd, who can only land in Dallas via a sign-and-trade. The Nets have not put
up any billboards begging Kidd to stay, like Sacramento did with Chris Webber
two summers ago. Maybe all they need to do is make sure the Spurs don't get
Roy Williams as coach."This will be the last time he will be recruited," said
Johnson, now the head coach at UC-Santa Cruz. He talks to Kidd regularly. "I
don't really think he enjoys the schmoozing. He wants to find a nice little
deal and finish out his career. I don't think he wants to go through that
high-stakes recruiting thing again."
