Jefferson's shots
a touchy subject
BY OHM YOUNGMISUK
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
Nets' 2nd-quarter struggles don't sit well with Richard Jefferson.
The way the game started, Richard Jefferson looked as if he was in for a
monster night.
He drained his first five shots for 11 first-quarter points against Minnesota
on Wednesday night, including a three-pointer with a defender all over him.
Jefferson was feeling it, but the evening took a turn for the worse for him
and the Nets in the second quarter. The Nets surrendered 32 points in the
period, and Jefferson scored only 14points over the last three quarters
Wednesday night in the Nets' third straight loss.
Jefferson neither complains about his role nor does he ever sound off about
being the second or sometimes third option behind Vince Carter and Jason
Kidd. But the most opinionated Net sounded like someone who could use more
plays called for him when things are going as they were in the first quarter
on Wednesday.
"We didn't do a very good job of playing through each other or through the
people we should have been," Jefferson said after the 100-90 loss to the
Wolves. "And then we got cold. They were hitting shots and mainly it was a
lot of defensive problems. But sometimes your offense is a part of the
problem."
"We were taking questionable shots that were leading to transition plays for
them," he added. "But you have to look at what we were doing at the offensive
end, what was successful, who was successful in that first quarter and were
we doing the same in the second quarter? We didn't do that."
Jefferson understands the Nets' success starts with Carter. However, in the
Nets' overtime loss at Atlanta on Monday, Jefferson scored 22 points but only
four of them came in the final 17minutes of the game. He took just two shots
during that span and none in overtime.
Jefferson acknowledges that Kidd brought the Nets back in the Atlanta game.
He is not a selfish type who will demand more plays or more touches. But when
the Nets lose three straight, Jefferson gets as frustrated as Lawrence Frank.
For the season, Jefferson is averaging 19.4 points a game. But he takes six
fewer shots per game than Carter, who averages 23.8 points. Jefferson is
going to the free-throw line just slightly more than Carter while averaging
three more minutes a night than the All-Star guard.
"Our second quarter we've really struggled the last few games," Jefferson
said of the Nets, who have been outscored 92-57 in their last three second
quarters. "I don't know what's going on with that or why we've struggled. We
have to figure it out. We had some success in that first quarter (in
Minnesota), but again, we went away from it."
In the second half in Minnesota, Jefferson took 10 shots, the same number
Kidd launched and one less than what Carter hoisted. So Frank is spreading
the ball through his Big Three. But the trio didn't have any help.
Minnesota's reserves outscored the Net subs 40-4. And when the Nets fall into
a second-half hole as they did Wednesday night, Jefferson, Carter and Kidd
have to work that much harder to get them back into the game. That usually
means tired legs in the fourth quarter and frustrated players in the locker
room afterward.
"Sometimes we're not following the game plans," Jason Collins said. "It's a
collective effort. It's everybody and we have to do a better job of avoiding
it."
