New Jersey Nets comfortable with mediocrity -- for now

Mediocrity is rarely an ambition, and, especially in sports, it has all the
glamour of a Turnpike off-ramp. But for a select few, mediocrity can be a
temporary aspiration, especially when it is an indication of exceeded
expectations.

The Nets are one such example. They are mediocre right now, and that's good.

"A lot of people probably didn't think we would be here," guard Keyon Dooling
said after the Nets beat the Clippers Saturday night. "But we're not content
with .500. I think there's still a lot of room for improvement."

A .500 record is the very essence of mediocrity, but at 6-6, the Nets can
assume a real sense of accomplishment, even if only about 15 percent of the
schedule has been played.

The reason is that few people expected even this level of competence from a
completely remade roster with eight new players, including two rookies in the
regular rotation.

Picked by many in the preseason to finish last in the Eastern Conference, the
Nets have been a bit of a surprise with their recent results, including four
victories in their last five games. Along the way they have beaten the
Pistons, the Raptors in Toronto, and swept a home-and-home sequence over the
Hawks.

Friday night, after their transformative overtime victory in Toronto, they
had any number of reasons to come out flat, and maybe even lose, to the
Clippers a night later. But they didn't, and now they are in ninth place in
the Eastern Conference at 6-6.

motivation. We keep playing like we did the last two (games) and we'll be a
really good team."

After dispatching the Clippers, who at 2-11 would covet mediocrity, coach
Lawrence Frank was in an understandably good mood, considering how his team
followed up one emotional victory with another more pedestrian one. But he
wasn't about to start crowing over where his team fits in the standings just
yet.

"The schedule is about improvement," he said. "Sometimes it will show in
wins, sometimes it won't. It's developing our players, getting them to play
together, getting them to play for each other. The wins will take care of
themselves."

There is still plenty of room for improvement as the Nets prepare for a tough
West Coast trip. They are allowing 103.2 points per game, which is
second-worst in the NBA. They are allowing teams to shoot 42 percent from the
3-point line, which is also second-worst in the league, but is actually an
improvement from two games ago when they were the worst.

Their rebounding differential, plus 1.5, is decent, and they are seventh in
the league in assists per game at 18.8.

Vince Carter and Devin Harris are proving a much more formidable backcourt
than many expected, averaging 24.3 and 23.2 points per game respectively, and
when Harris has played the Nets are 6-3. When he hasn't they are 0-3.

So, what does it all mean, to be 6-6 this early in the season?

"I didn't have any expectations as far as what our record was going to be,"'
Carter said. "I don't think many people in general thought we would be in
this position. So I think we're doing well."
