Soccer.net Aug.29 Wolves have signed former Aston Villa midfielder Joey Gudjonsson on a season-long loan deal from Real Betis. The Icelandic international is expected to go straight into Dave Jones' squad for the game against Portsmouth. As part of the deal, Wolves have an option to sign the 23-year-old from Spanish club Betis at the end of the season. Jones, who turned to Gudjonsson after failing in a bid for Brazilian Emerson, said: `If he Joey plays as well as he did at Aston Villa, he will be okay. `He will give us something which we have not got at the moment in midfield.' Gudjonsson netted on his Villa debut in the 5-2 win at Middlesbrough in January, but was then sent off for a two-footed lunge on Matthew Upson during the explosive Birmingham derby at St Andrews on March 3. He scored against Leeds on the final day of last season as his loan spell came to an end. Gudjonsson has won 13 caps for Iceland and played against Scotland at Hampden Park in the Euro 2004 qualifier on March 29, scoring in his side's 2-1 defeat. The combative midfielder began his career at RKC Waalwijk in Holland, where he played against Bradford in the 2000 Intertoto Cup, before joining Betis in September 2001.
