Associated Press Sep. 2, 2003 9:46 p.m. COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP)— Japan goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi signed a two-year contract with Danish club FC Nordsjaelland on Tuesday. Kawaguchi, who previously played with English club Portsmouth and Japan's Yokohama F Marinos, has played 55 games for Japan, and was selected for the 1998 and 2002 World Cups. FC Nordsjaelland, lying 10th in the SAS League, didn't disclose the terms of the deal. Kawaguchi, to be presented by the club on Thursday, will be FC Nordsjaelland's third goalie after Jan Hoffmann and substitute Jesper Hansen. Allan K. Pedersen, who owns the Danish club, said it was "a fantastic opportunity" to get Kawaguchi "because the goalkeeper position is a vulnerable one." Based in Farum, 20 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of the capital, Copenhagen, FC Nordsjaelland was founded in 1991 as Farum Boldklub. Earlier this year, it changed its name to FC Nordsjaelland, to reflect the northern part of the Zealand island where it is based. Sjaelland is Zealand in Danish.
