This is not the Jameer Nelson I’ve seen play for the Magic.

How the Magic are 10-4 without their point guard playing at a high level is a
testament to Dwight Howard, Ryan Anderson, J.J. Redick and the rest of the
team.

Wednesday night, in an OT loss to the San Antonio Spurs, the Magic, down two
starters, needed Nelson to come up big.

He crashed and burned — 2-of-16 shooting for four points — while his
counterpart, Spurs point guard Tony Parker, scored 25 points with nine
assists and seven rebounds.

Nelson couldn’t stop him, and the Magic were forced to play seldom-used
Larry Hughes on him, hoping Hughes’ size counter Parker’s quickness. He
couldn’t slow Parker’s dribble-penetration either.

“On the defensive end, we allowed Tony Parker to get too deep and he was
able to score or kick it out to guys for threes, but our offense wasn’t a
problem,” Howard said.

Not entirely true. Dwight couldn’t have possibly seen the boxscore.

The Magic shot 33.3 percent and, worse, their red-hot 3-point shooting cooled
to 4-of-21 for 19 percent.

“I had Jameer out there with no legs so he passed up the one shot, not his
fault…38 minutes on the third night. that wasn’t right,” Coach Stan Van
Gundy said.

This is Van Gundy sticking up for Nelson and taking the blame. Jameer had
enough strength to put up 16 shots — the most attempts on the team.

Nelson has shot 39 percent overall and 26 percent from 3-point range this
season. He’s averaging just 8.3 points per game with 5.4 assists.

Throughout the last seven years, Nelson, at times, has been able to carry the
Magic offensively. Where is that guy?
