Carter: Bring Jermaine O'Neal to N.J.

EAST RUTHERFORD -- One of the kids at Vince Carter's basketball camp informed
him that Jermaine O'Neal said he wants to be a Net. Carter hopes management can
make it happen.

"That's great news," he said Wednesday morning. "He's an All-Star. He's
accomplished a lot. If we can work that, of course that just makes us even
better."

The Nets re-signed Carter last month, representing their biggest off-season
move. But they could rekindle talks with Indiana for O'Neal, who also likes the
idea of being a Laker.

One source said the Nets will wait for Indiana to call. They don't want to give
up Richard Jefferson, Nenad Krstic and Marcus Williams for O'Neal, as the Pacers
asked for in their last conversation.

Boston's acquisitions of Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett make the Atlantic Division
better. But Carter believes the Nets, as constituted, will be improved with
Jamaal Magloire on board and Krstic being healthy.

"We're still pretty good," Carter said. "With Krstic coming back, that makes us
a lot better. Our nucleus of guys has another year together. ... It's going to
be great. I think we can do some good things. We'll see what they do with the
trades."
