Bird to address offseason plans

We know Jim O'Brien's wish list: more athleticism, more size, more low-post
scoring.

JOB 的許願清單：更強的運動力，更大的體型，更多的低位得分。

We'll find out what Larry Bird has in mind when he meets with the media for
his season wrapup briefing Tuesday morning at Conseco Fieldhouse. He'll
reflect on 2008-09 and address issues facing the team this offseason,
including the likelihood of further roster alteration via the draft, free
agency and trades.

大鳥在週二的記者會將會作球季總結的簡報，對這個球季的感想，以及這個季末將面對
的問題，包括透過選秀，自由球員和交易來作進一步陣容變動的可能性。

A team loaded with offensive threats, the Pacers were sorely lacking once
again on defense.

"We're not necessarily built to be a great defensive team," O'Brien said.
"Right now, our talent lends itself to scoring the fifth-most points in the
league and shooting well from the (3-point line). I just don't think we are
athletic enough to be the type of defensive team that allows you to get in
the playoffs and allows you to do something in the playoffs.

「我們還不足以打造成一支防守勁旅，」O'Brien 說：「目前，我們球員的天份讓我們

"Part of it is physical, part of it is we have to develop a mental
disposition to defense and understand how critical it is. Our player

staff is."

Slotted 13th, the Pacers will learn their draft position on May 19 when the
NBA conducts its Draft Lottery. They'll have a 0.6 percent chance of winding
up with the first pick, a 2.2 percent chance of moving into the top three.

五月 19 號抽樂透時，就會知道排第 13 順位的溜馬實際的選秀順位。賽到狀元籤的機
會是 0.6 %，前三順位的機會是 2.2 %。

The June 25 NBA Draft is just one of the avenues Bird can use to strengthen
the team. Shortly thereafter comes the opening of the free agent signing
season.

六月 25 號的選秀會只是大鳥能用來補強球隊的方法之一。之後就是自由球員市場開市。

There are five free agents (Jarrett Jack, Rasho Nesterovic, Maceo Baston,
Stephen Graham and Josh McRoberts) and options on two others (a team option
on Marquis Daniels and a player option for Travis Diener).

球隊有五名自由球員 (Jarrett Jack，Rasho Nesterovic，Maceo Baston，Stephen 
Graham，Josh McRoberts) 還有兩名球員有選擇權 (Marquis Daniels 的球隊選擇權，

"We’re not going to go into next year with the same team. Absolutely not,"
said O'Brien. "We need to improve our talent level. That goes without saying.
If you said anything differently, everybody would expect us to have to have
our head examined. You have to improve constantly in order to build.

O'Brien 說：「我們不會帶著同樣陣容進入下個球季，絕不可能。我們必須增強我們的

"Our job is to win a championship. Do we think we have the players now that
can win a championship? No. So we have to constantly improve -- through the
draft, through trades, through free agency -- our talent base in order to
continue to take the steps that we need to take in order to grow it."

The two positions O'Brien would like to see targeted are center and point
guard.

"We have to become more athletic, especially at the center spot," he said.
"Roy (Hibbert) is going to be a very good center but we need kind of a young
Jeff Foster that can also score in the low post.

"We need to realize at some point in time we're going to have to become
taller maybe and a little more athletic at the point guard spot even though
we're very happy with the guys that played the point for us this year. But
down the road it'd be nice to maybe have a young point guard that we might be
able to draft if that's what Larry determines that we can bring along over a
period of a couple of years.

「必須了解的是，我們有時候需要更高大，可能還得更有爆發力的控球後衛，儘管我們

"We just have to improve. We had seven new players last year and I don't
anticipate we'll have seven new (players) next year because we're very
pleased with the type of guys we have representing us right now."

Team culture changed, now Bird moves to upgrade talent

In his just-concluded year-end press briefing, Larry Bird didn't break any
major news but the Pacers President made several interesting and perhaps
telling points.

在年度總結的簡報中，大鳥並沒有發表什麼重大消息，但還是有些值得注意的重點。

．Like Coach Jim O'Brien, he believes the key to significant improvement for
2009-10 begins with the defense. But he differs from O'Brien's stance that
it's primarily a matter of personnel. Bird said he believes "(the players)
have more in them" than was apparent in 2008-09.

和教練 JOB 一樣，他也相信在 09-10 球季要有顯著進步的關鍵就在於防守。但不同於
JOB 認為是球員能力的問題，大鳥認為這個球季球員的能力沒有完全發揮。

．One of the keys to internal improvement defensively will rest with Danny
Granger, who needs to "take leadership on the defensive end," Bird said.
"When he does that, the other players will follow him."

的角色，當他作到了，其他球員也會起而效尤。」

．Bird would like to add a post player to strengthen the inside game at both
ends of the floor but indicated that need would much more likely be filled
with a veteran player through a trade or free agency than in the draft.

．The interest in another post player is in no way an indicator of a lack of
faith in Roy Hibbert, who started 42 games as a rookie but struggled with
foul trouble, but rather reflects a desire to strengthen the overall
frontcourt rotation.

找尋另一位禁區球員，不代表對 Roy Hibbert 失去信心 - 以菜鳥身份先發 42 場，但

．Though the Pacers fell short of the playoffs in 2008-09, Bird was pleased
that "we've changed the culture" of the team, playing a style that fans enjoy
with players that not only avoided off-court trouble but actively reached out
to the community.

．If not for the injury to Mike Dunleavy, Bird believes the Pacers would've
made the playoffs in 2009.

．Uncertainty over Dunleavy's return could change the team's plans for free
agent Marquis Daniels. It has been generally assumed the Pacers would not
pick up the option on Daniels' contract but Bird said he'd consider
re-signing Daniels "if we feel Mike won't be back in time."

Dunleavy 歸期未明，這點可能會影響到球隊對自由球員 Marquis Daniels 的計畫。一

．Bird will make a qualifying offer to and would like to re-sign Jarrett
Jack, who he believed made progressive improvement throughout the season to
the point he "was one of our best clutch players" in the second half of the
season.

．Because of the recession and the potential for a dramatic reduction in the
salary cap, Bird said the franchise needs to be prepared for a variety of
possibilities in the free agent market this summer. "I see a major change in
free agency in this league," he said.

因為不景氣，加上薪資上限可能會大幅縮水，大鳥說球隊需要作好準備來因應今夏自由

．Bird believes the Pacers might be able to split the mid-level exception to
sign two free agents as well as retain Jack, assuming the price is right.
"We've got to be creative with what we do this summer," he said.

．The point guard position is in good hands with Jack and T.J. Ford. "They
both can get the job done," Bird said.

．He has not talked to ownership about a contract extension, saying he'd
prefer "a handshake agreement" to continue in his current role.

season, about an extension.

"because with his athletic ability, he could be a big plus for us this year."

．Though O'Brien also said his wish list includes drafting a bigger, more
athletic point guard to develop, Bird said the point guards in this year's
draft are generally small. "It's nice to have a wish list," Bird said with a
smile. "I'd like to have $30 million to spend."
