一個位於義大利南方西西里島上了無生氣的小村落凱奈托僅擁有三十九位居民.至少
可以說,這樣的小鎮除非發生極不尋常的事件,否則不可能登上國際新聞,不過,今年
(2004)年初卻發生發生了這樣的事.這不是好消息,但也不算壞,只能說整件事就是很詭
異.事實上,現在這個小鎮就像電視影集<x檔案>的場景.
這件持續進行的神秘事件始於一月中旬,當時有二十多棟建築物出現自燃現象.一連串
的神祕小火災並未造成死傷,目前為止仍是每天上演.包括保險線路盒,微波爐,車輛,乃
至於整棟建築物都被焚毀.剛開始,警方的假設是有縱火狂偷偷摸摸做這些事,不過在好
幾名警察目睹若干電線突然著火後,他們排除了縱火的可能性.
由於火災持續發生,因此下一步的合理假設便是凱奈托有嚴重的電力問題.義大利最大
的電力公司恩奈迅速對此做出回應,切斷了全鎮的電力.他們帶來了一台緊急發電機並將
它接上,當發電機也起火時,他們很快便知道此神秘事件與電力無關.此外,就連拔掉插頭
的檯燈或其他電器設備據說也化為火球.
打從這些詭異的事件發生幾個月來,已經陸陸續續有大批工程師,科學家,警探,乃至幾
名自稱"打擊魔鬼專家"抵達這個鎮試圖解開謎團.史賓納托市長抱怨:每次科學家一來到
鎮上就認為整起事件是設計的,要不然就是自以為在兩分鐘內解開整件謎題.他們都錯了.
就在地方政府宣佈緊急狀態,接著將三十九位居民撤離至鄰近的一家三星級旅館後,市
長並非唯一一個發牢騷的人.一名鎮上的商店老板娘在旅館住了將近五個月後抱怨:我只
想回家.我不知道到底起火原因是什麼,我再也不在乎了-就算是惡魔也無所謂.
誰知道,或許這些火災都是惡魔的傑作.天主教教會驅魔師安莫斯懷疑有此可能性.他
向一份報紙表示:[我見過這種事,惡魔佔據一棟房屋,然後現身於電器].安莫斯鼓勵當地
神父訴請宗教當局驅魔,不過這名神父選擇讓科學家將事情理出頭緒.
不過安莫斯至少獲得了一位鎮民的支持:[我親眼看見冷氣機起火然後在三十秒內化為
灰燼.這些事件並不尋常,我覺得我們最好開始尋求不同的協助.]
同時,凱奈托的確越來越像<x檔案>的場景.鎮上唯一一條街上除了有兩輛消防車和警車
持續待命外,還有一群搞不清楚狀況的科學家.一輛車頂有旋轉天線的大貨車試圖搜尋不
尋常的電波,另外,到處有各種架設於三腳架上的科學儀器.在場的火山學家推論,有種罕
見的自然現場導致電力由地心規律地震動可能就是罪魁禍首.

The sleepy little village of Canneto di Caronia on the southern Italian
island of Sicily has a population of just 39 residents. To say the least,
it would take a pretty unusual event for a town this tiny to produce an
international news story,but that's what the world got earlier this year.
It wasn't good news,nor extremely bad--but it was just plain weird. In fact,
the town now looks like a set for the TV show "The X-Files."
The ongoing mystery began in mid-January when what appeared to be
spontaneous combustion fires erupted in about twenty different buildings.The
mysterious series of small fires,which haven't killed or injured anyone,have
been appearing almost daily until now. Everything from fuse boxes to microwave
ovens,to a car and one entire apartment have gone up in flames. The police at
first assumed a pyromaniac was on the prowl,but after several officers
witnessed,some wires suddenly catch fire,they ruled out arson.
As the fires kept coming,the logical next assumption was that Canneto had a
serious electrical problem. Italy's largest utility company,Enel,soon
responded by cutting off the twon's power. They brought in an emergency
generator and hooked it up,but quickly learned that the mysterious problem
wasn't electrical when the generator also ignited. Moreover,even lamps and
other appliances that were unplugged have reprotedly become fireballs.
In the months since the weird events first began,an endless flow of
engineers,scientists,detectives and even a few self-appointed "ghost busters"
have descended on the town to solve the riddle."Every time some new scientist
comes to town, they arrive thinking the whole thing has been invented,or that
they're going to solve the whole mystery in two minutes.They've all been wrong
,"Mayor Pedro Spinnato grumbled.
The mayor wasn't the only one grumbling after the regional government
declared a state of emergency and evacuated the 39 residendts to a nearby
three-star hotel. After nearly five months spent living there,townswoman and
shopkeeper Rosi Cioffo griped,"I just want to go home. I don't know what's
causing the fires and I don't care anymore--even if it's the Devil."
Who knows,maybe the fires are the work of the Devil.Catholic Church exorcist
Gabriele Amorth supspects it is so."I've seen things like this before,"he
told one newspaper."Demons occupy a house and appear in electrical goods."
Amorth urged the local priest to call in the religious authorities to perform
an exorcism,but the priest opted to let the scientists try to figure things
out first.
Amorth has at least one vote among the townsfolk,though.Antonio Pezzino,
whose house was the first hit by the fires,said,"I've seen an air conditioner
burst into flames and burn down in 30 seconds.These are not normal events,and
I think we're going to have to start looking for a different kind of help."
In the meantime,Canneto really has taken on the appearance of an "X-Files"
set.Other than the two fire trucks and police jeep constantly parked on the
town's single street,there;s the presence of all the baffled science experts.
A van with large,rotating antennas on top is searching for unusual radio
waves and various scientific instruments atop tripods can be seen here and
there. Vulcanologists on the scene hypothedize that a rare natural phenomenon
in which electrical energy pulsates up from the earth's core could be the
culprit.
