Q: Is the slow start tougher because the standards got raised so high last
season?
A: Of course. And the standards are within this locker room. We expect to
deal well. It's our own expectations that make it more frustrating. If people
have outlandish expectations for us or really poor expectations for us, those
never truly coincide with our own. That's what's important.
Q: Have these first few weeks been especially frustrating then because of the
record?
A: Yeah, very frustrating for us. We're not used to having that sort of
record and losing those sorts of games. It's tough. But we've got to make it
a positive for us.
Q: What has been the biggest factor in the slow start?
A: I think adjusting to new chemistry. And we haven't necessarily earned it
some nights. And some nights it's just bad luck. ... A couple shots here and
there in both games against Utah, a free throw against San Antonio, it's a
totally different record.
Q: What do the Suns still need to prove as the season goes on? Where does
this team need to get better?
A: Discipline. Being sharper offensively, not make mistakes. And at the same
time defensively, not give up easy baskets and be in the right place as much
as possible.
Q: Can you win in the playoffs with this style? Do you think that got
answered in the playoffs last season?
A: I think so.
Q: What's the key to being able to continue it all through June?
A: Being healthy and having discipline. Last year, we weren't that healthy,
and I thought at times we just broke down. We were still right there. If we
can pick it up and become a little more disciplined and our chemistry can
continue to grow, there's no reason we can't beat anybody.
Q: Would you have just as much fun if you were on a team that was walking the
ball up and scoring 85 or 90 a night?
A: It depends. If you've got a good group of guys and you're all together,
yes. If you're losing and guys don't play together, then, no, it's not going
to be as fun. For me, it's not so much the style, it's how good the guys are
as people and how they fit together.
Q: How important is the fun factor in the way that you guys play? It has to
be more fun than if you played a different style. Does that contribute to the
success you've had?
A: I suppose. I think you should have fun no matter how you're playing and
take pride in how you're playing and enjoy it. You're usually more successful
if you have that attitude. Regardless of how you're playing, what style you
play, you've got to try to make it fun. If it's a job, it can wear you down
at times.
