標題[外電] Suns pick Brown for PG depth

The Suns selected Dee Brown as the player they will sign Wednesday to fill
the team's vacant roster spot and provide depth at point guard.
Brown, 24, was starting two weeks ago for the Washington Wizards until the
Wizards made a three-team trade that acquired Mike James and Javaris
Crittenton, leading to Brown being waived on Dec. 11.
Brown played in 17 games for Washington and started 11 with averages of 2.4
points, 1.9 assists, 1.6 rebounds and 0.6 steals in 13.7 minutes per game. He
shot 38.6 percent from the field and 30 percent on 3-pointers.
Brown spent the 2007-08 season with a pro team in Turkey before earning his
way back into the NBA with his play for Washington's NBA Summer League team.
Brown spent his rookie season with Utah in 2006-07, appearing in 49 games and
averaging 1.9 points and 1.7 assists in 9.2 minutes per game. He shot 32.7
percent from the field that season.
"We like his intensity, his quickness," Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said.
"He's got some NBA experience and playoff experience with Utah. He's also
played at a high level, being in a championship game at Illinois (in 2005).
He won't be overwhelmed out on the court if he gets the chance. He's a young
guy so he's got a chance to make a mark and improve."
The Suns will continue using Leandro Barbosa at backup point guard and Brown
could be behind rookie Goran Dragic if Steve Nash was to get hurt.
Phoenix considered a veteran like Damon Stoudamire or Troy Hudson with an eye
toward who it might want to fill in for Nash in a long-term situation. The
call ultimately came down to Brown and Eddie Gill, a NBA-experienced point
guard who now plays in the NBA Development League. The players participated
in a six-man tryout Monday with Darrell Armstrong and Walker Russell too.
Brown is known for tenacious defense and speed, earning him the college
nickname of "the one-man fastbreak."
"He's got a lot of quickness and he plays really hard," Kerr said. "He'll
pick up full-court defensively and make people work. In practice situations,
we need that energy."
Brown must pass a physical in Phoenix today before he can sign Wednesday, the
final day the Suns have to return to the 13-player roster minimum.
