全方面的運動癡 azcentral http://0rz.com/8V6g "He was in our backyard all the time playing soccer," former neighbor Geoff Cortnall said. "When he was 7, he would juggle a soccer ball with his feet and head, and we'd be whipping tennis balls at him to try and distract him. "Didn't really work." 06/18 19:30 NYTimes http://0rz.com/qae9 N.B.A. point guards feature some kind of ball, whether it is the round mound of wadded-up tape he and his younger brother Martin used to play hall-hockey with, or the basketball he took out to shoot on Christmas Eve in the rain at the junior-high-school court behind his parents’ house in Victoria, British Columbia, or the tennis ball he once dribbled around Santa Clara University on his way to class, or the soccer ball he once kept aloft for 600 consecutive kicks until he collapsed. azcentral http://0rz.com/8V6g He had blossomed in part by getting in extra work at the University of Victoria gym. Not that university officials always knew about it. Nash and his friends had figured out a way to jimmy the lock so that when the gym was empty in the evening, they could still sneak in. When Nash was awarded an honorary degree from the university five months ago, he playfully joked about the school's questionable decision, considering his history there. NYTimes http://0rz.com/qae9 When he took up basketball in the eighth grade it was for “social reasons,” a means of hanging out with his friends. Being able to use his hands felt almost like cheating, because the sport he loved best was soccer. “ ‘Goal’ was my first word,” 他國二開始打籃球是,因為同學在打。 azcentral http://0rz.com/8V6g "He would come in and say, 'I shot 65 percent,' " John Nash said. "I would say, 'How do you know? Did you shoot 10 times?' 'No,' he would say. 'I shot 100.' " To this day, John finds Steve's work ethic head-scratching. "It's not me, really," he said. "I'm really relaxed. Maybe it's his mother, Jean. She's enormously competitive." http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/050527&num=0 "Steve came in from the court one day," his father, John Nash, said, "and he told me, 'I shot 69 percent from the free-throw line.' I said, 'How did you work that out?' And he said, 'Well, I took 100 shots and I made 69 of them.' That's the way he was. And if he thought he wasn't shooting well, he would triple the shots. Instead of 100 shots, he'd take 300." "Steve would dribble the ball everywhere he went. He always had a ball with him," said Ian Hyde-Lay, who coached Nash at St. Michael's University (High) School. "We'd play games Saturday night and he'd be back banging on the door of the gym Sunday morning. He was always playing, always working. He always wanted to be a better player." 捨棄了足球,選擇了籃球 http://www.jockbio.com/Bios/Nash/Nash_bio.html Steve played in an organized league for the first time in the eighth grade, at which point he told his mom that he would one day be an NBA star. Considering Steve’s slight build—not to mention Canada’s underwhelming hoops legacy— this seemed like an unrealistic goal to say the least. What’s more, Steve appeared to have a brighter future in other sports. He attended St. Michaels University School, and as a junior was named British Columbia’s most valuable player in soccer. A spot on the Canadian national team was his for the taking. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/050527&num=0 "He played in a Christmas tournament in Tucson when he was in 12th grade and the gym was packed with scouts because Jason Kidd was playing the game before," John Nash said. "And everyone on the team was saying, 'This is great. There'll be all these scouts to see us.' But as soon as the other game ended, all the scouts left. There was no one there. No one wanted to stick around to watch some kid from British Columbia. That was a little disappointing, but that was typical of what people were thinking." http://www.jockbio.com/Bios/Nash/Nash_bio.html Both Steve and his coach believed he could play major college basketball in the U.S. The problem was that hardly anyone else did. In 1991 and 1992, Hyde-Lay wrote and called more than two dozen Division 1-A programs in the States, including Arizona, Duke, Indiana, Maryland and Villanova. Every response was the same: No Thanks. For motivation, Steve put every rejection letter in a shoe box (which, legend has it, he still keeps to this day). The one school that expressed interest in Steve was tiny Santa Clara, a Jesuit university about an hour’s drive south of San Francisco. Hyde-Lay sent game film to assistant coach Scott Gradin, who broke out laughing when he watched the video. Admittedly, Steve didn’t face the stiffest competition in high school, but opponents were literally falling on their backsides trying to guard him. 橄欖球 - 有恩必報 theglobeandmail http://0rz.com/vKag With his scholarship in hand and a provincial basketball title in his pocket even Hyde-Lay – also the rugby coach – expected Nash would spend the rest of the school year getting ready for his new basketball challenge. Instead Nash suited up for the school’s rugby team, playing the sport for the first time. “I asked him if he was sure he wanted to do that,” Hyde-Lay recalled. “And he said there were a lot of guys on the basketball team for whom rugby was their first sport and they kept their commitments and made sacrifices and helped him reach his goals, so he was going to play rugby to help them reach theirs. That was very telling to me.” Nash led SMU to a provincial rugby championship as well, distinguishing himself not only by making goal kicks both right-footed and left, but also by proving his concept of team extended beyond what others could do to help him achieve his goals. NYTimes http://0rz.com/qae9 Three years ago, newly repatriated to Phoenix, which had traded him to the Dallas Mavericks in 1998, Nash’s back went out during practice, the result of a congenital displacement of his fifth lumbar vertebra. To relieve the muscle tightness, he now will often lie on the court during rests and timeouts. And though Nash may be getting better and better as a player, his body doesn’t recover from exertion as fast. Nash’s preferred method of treating his sore muscles and swollen joints is to lever himself into a 53-degree ice bath, wearing thermal socks to keep the frostbite out of his toes. “I can’t even pull a beer out of water that cold,” says the Suns’ assistant coach Alvin Gentry magazine.stack http://0rz.com/o4id Steve’s exhaustive approach demands an incredible amount of time and dedication, along with help from one of the league’s best, Suns’ strength coach Erik Phillips. Phillips acknowledges that Steve is an immaculate pupil. “ His work ethic is always perfect,” Phillips says. “He maintains a level of strength and stabilization throughout the whole year, so we will take little steps here and there pre-season, during the season and post-season. Steve’s an unbelievable athlete who is so in-tune to his body. He knows what he needs to work on and what he needs to lay off of. Anything I ask him to do, he is the poster child for the correct technique.” 食物篇 http://www.nba.com/suns/news/feature_nashdiet_090709.html A typical breakfast for the team’s playmaker would be wheat-free cereal with non-dairy milk (almond milk), while lunch and dinner would be a chicken or fish salad. In between meals, one can always find Nash snacking on fruits, raw nuts and natural energy bars. It seems that Nash’s diet is as much as what he eats as what he doesn’t eat. Before practice the rookies always bring doughnuts for the veterans, but Nash never partakes. After games, there is a huge spread of food laid out for the players, but he rarely eats any of it. “I’m trying to get to Grant’s level, but I’ll never get to Steve’s,” he said. “I like too much stuff to be able to do what he does.” Dudley claims that if there was a percentage breakdown, Hill eats healthy 80 percent of the time, leaving 20 percent of his diet comprised of food that isn’ t being eaten for nutritional purposes. While that may be outstanding, he estimates Nash’s ratio to be more like 95 percent healthy to five percent junk.
