[外電] Phoenix Suns aim for rebound

Suns coach Alvin Gentry came to practice Tuesday at US Airways Center armed
with facts, figures and film.

The numbers show that the Suns have the worst defensive field-goal percentage
in the NBA. The fact is, they are the worst total rebounding team in the NBA.
And as Grant Hill observed: "The film doesn't lie."

During a brutal schedule to start the season and with key new players to
indoctrinate, the Suns have let their attention to defensive detail slip.
And they weren't exactly the Boston Celtics even when they were paying
attention.

We've just got to get better. We know that," Gentry said. "We have to do a much
better job of containing the ball and securing the ball. Part of our defensive
problem right now is we're not rebounding the basketball. We play good defense
on the initial play and they get it back and we have to guard again.
"It puts us in too tough a situation to try and stop them a second or a third
time."

Gentry said the Suns have charted their defense against the opponent's first
shot and at last check they were limiting teams to about 40 to 41-percent
shooting on the first attempt. But teams are shooting 49.1 percent against them
on all shots.

教練說我們本來是計畫讓對手第一次進攻的命中率至少控制在40%~41%
但目前高達49%...


"Offensively we knew we would be OK, and we are," Gentry said. "Defensively we
have to get better, not just against dribble penetration and in the post. Part
of being a good defensive team is finishing the possession by coming up with
the rebound."

進攻上沒有太大的問題，但防守上我們要更好，不能只是觀察對方運球和傳球而已。
要成為一個好的防守隊伍最重要的是要控制籃板球。


Playmaker Steve Nash said the second-chance opportunities the Suns are giving
up "hurt us more than anything" but added that everything can stand improvement.

Nash說"沒有其他任何事情比我們失去的二次進攻更能傷害我們"
但他繼續補充道"但一切都還能改善啦。"


"We have to take everything to heart: chemistry, defense, rebounding, our
offensive approach. Everything needs to improve," Nash said. "We're below .500
We've got a lot of work to do."

Notes

Gentry said the Suns' rebounding woes have nothing to do with playing a zone
defense, which the team did to great effect in the Western Conference finals
against the Los Angeles Lakers last season.

Namely, because the Suns haven't played much zone defense.

教練說我們悽慘的籃板跟區域聯防沒有太大的關係
至少區防在我們上季西區冠軍賽對上湖人有不錯的效果。

沒籃板的主因是我們並沒有使用太多的區域聯防


"Less than I anticipated," Gentry said. "I think to be a good team, you have
to establish your man-to-man defense. If you want me to be honest, it was a
fluky thing last year that worked in the playoffs and everybody expected us to
come back and do it this year.

"他們還不符我期望"教練表示
"我認為一個好的隊伍是建立在是否具有好的一對一防守。
如果你要我說實話，上季季後賽這麼成功的防守只能算運氣好，
而現在大家都期望那些事能延續到今年。"


"In a zone, they shoot the basketball and you hope they're missing. If we're
going to be a really good team we have to be solid in our man-to-man, and then
you can throw a zone out there every now and then."

如果我們要成為一隻真正的強隊，就必須鞏固一對一防守，如此一來就能丟棄區域聯防。"


"But to do that right now and do it all the time, I'm not for it. We may have
to play some zone in certain situations, but we want to be a good man-to-man
team. That's what we were last year."

但我們仍然要有好的一對一防守，就像我們去年那樣。


- Gentry said the Suns obviously will be better off defensively and on the
boards when Robin Lopez returns from a left knee sprain. Meanwhile, he's not
buying into the idea that the Suns just don't have rebounders or are too
undersized to compete on the boards.

教練說當肉汁傷癒復出後對防守一定會有顯著的提升，
畢竟我們不是因為沒有籃板手或是整體身高太矮才簽他的。

"I expect for them to secure the rebound if we have a good defensive
possession," he said. "We don't have any excuses. If you're undersized you
have to do a better job of boxing out.

"If you're a little bit slower you have to do a better job of boxing out."

"我期待他們能好好保護籃板，我們有著很好的防守潛能"教練說
"我們沒有任何藉口，如果你高度不足、速度不快，就應該付出更多努力來對抗。"


We don't have a ceiling. If you put ceilings on your team it gives everybody
an out. We expect guys to secure the ball after they've had a good defensive
stand.

"I don't think you can have any limitations. Rebounding is the least
talent-(related) thing. There are a lot of great rebounders in our league I
wouldn't classify as great basketball players.

"籃板是最不講求天份才能的東西，聯盟中有很多優秀的籃板手，
但我不會將他們歸類為優秀的籃球員。"


" . . . A lot of guys have made a heck of a living by being aggressive and
securing the ball and being good rebounders. We have to find a way to do that.
Right now it's an Achilles' heel for us. We have who we have here. We can't
wait to get Dennis Rodman back. We don't have Dennis Rodman."

"有很多人因為極具侵略性且能保護好籃板球而能在聯盟中生存，我們必須想辦法做到這點
但現在有個非常致命的問題，這裡有誰能做？不可能去叫小蟲來，我們沒有小蟲。
