Phoenix Suns reserves beginning to provide big spark

BOSTON - It has been a long path to get to this point, where the Suns could
feel comfortable about an all-reserve lineup.

There were times this season when Suns coach Alvin Gentry thought it was
impossible to even keep five reserves in the rotation with this team's
makeup, particularly before its December trade.

There were several instances he could not trust the bench in fourth quarters,

In Monday's 104-103 overtime win at New Jersey, it was the reserves' turn to
save the starters. The Suns enjoyed their biggest bench-scoring game of the
season with 64 points, led by Marcin Gortat's 17, and had Gentry wishing it
had been more after his starters nearly frittered the game away.

In just their second game as a unit with point guard Aaron Brooks, the

"We've got a deep team, and every night someone is stepping up for us," said
Suns reserve power forward Hakim Warrick, who posted 16 points and seven

On Monday, his scoring came with style, including four "helicopter" slams,
and with a good deal of help from his improving jump shot.

"It feels like this is a turning point, especially the way the last two games

Brooks was more aggressive, looking for his shot in his second game, but he
went 0 for 4 in the second quarter, when fellow reserve Mickael Pietrus

After an ugly third quarter by both teams, Brooks helped extend the Suns'
lead by scoring eight of their first 12 third-quarter points with two
3-pointers and a runner. He also delivered three assists in the quarter
without a turnover but was the first one to be pulled in favor of Steve Nash
with the Suns leading 86-79 and 4:49 left.

Gentry regretted not sticking with the reserves when they were playing well
in the fourth quarter but was more disturbed with the ongoing trend of late
collapses. He considers the leads the Suns blew against Sacramento twice, at
Detroit and at Portland to be standings-shifters, although they pulled out
two similar scenarios Sunday and Monday.
